Meet Gus, a handsome Australian Shepherd who is ready to finally be someone's beloved companion.

Gus came from a breeding situation where he didn't receive the care, attention, structure, or enrichment that a dog like him needs. Because of that, he has a lot of built-up energy and is still learning what it means to simply be a dog and part of a family.

Since coming into rescue, Gus has been neutered, vaccinated, and brought up to date on prevention. He is crate trained, although he can become restless when crated for long periods. Gus is not a dog who will thrive in a home where his people are gone for long hours. He needs an active family committed to giving him plenty of physical exercise, mental stimulation, structure, and consistency.

As an Australian Shepherd, Gus is smart, energetic, and eager to have something to do. He would love a family who will take him on walks, hikes, runs, adventures, or give him another appropriate outlet for all that Aussie energy.

Gus is currently 1 year and 6 months old and approximately 43 lbs.

Other dogs: Gus is currently fostered with other dogs and does well with them. However, continued socialization will be an important requirement for his adopter. We want his new family to continue exposing him to other dogs appropriately and reinforcing healthy boundaries so he remains dog friendly and does not become overly possessive of his people.

Children: Gus can do well with respectful, dog-savvy children who understand boundaries and know how to interact gently with dogs. Because he is high energy, interactions with children should be supervised by adults, and his family needs to understand that his energy level may be overwhelming for very young or inexperienced children.

Cats & chickens: Gus is NOT appropriate for a home with cats or chickens.

Most importantly, Gus needs someone willing to invest in him. He isn't looking for a home where hell spend his days sitting in a crate. He needs someone who will work with him, exercise him, continue his training and socialization, and show him all the things he missed out on before coming into rescue.

Gus spent the first part of his life being used for what he could produce. Now, we want the rest of his life to be about being loved for who he is.
