Petunia’s story didn’t start the way any dog’s should.
She was an owned dog who lived her life outside. When she became pregnant, the people who were supposed to care for her decided they didn’t want to deal with it so Petunia was abandoned.
She gave birth on the streets and somehow managed to keep herself and her babies safe until the entire little family could finally be rescued.
Petunia did her job. She raised her babies, kept them safe, and watched every single one of them find a family of their own.
Now it’s Mama’s turn.
Since coming into rescue, Petunia has been spayed, vaccinated, and has successfully completed heartworm treatment. She’s healthy, ready, and waiting for someone to finally choose her.
Petunia is a petite cattle dog mix weighing only about 28 pounds, but don’t let her small size fool you the cattle dog instincts are still very much there! Her ideal adopter will have experience with cattle dogs or working breeds and understand their intelligence, drive, herding instincts, and need for direction.
She is currently fostered with other dogs and loves everyone. While another dog is not required in her forever home, continued socialization with other dogs will be important for her long-term success. Petunia has come so far, and we want her family to continue building on that progress.
She is not currently fostered with cats, so we do not recommend a home with cats. She does live around livestock and does well when given appropriate direction and boundaries.
Because so much of Petunia’s previous life was spent outside and ultimately on the streets, she will benefit from a home that understands the importance of routine and consistency, particularly with potty breaks. She is completely crate trained and does very well when she knows what is expected of her.
And despite being a cattle dog, Petunia isn’t asking for someone to run a marathon with her every morning. She doesn’t need an extremely high-energy household. She needs structure, continued socialization, patience, and someone who understands the dog in front of them.
More than anything, Petunia needs something she has never truly had:
Someone who won’t give up on her.
She spent her life surviving. She kept her babies alive when nobody was there to take care of her. She watched them all get their happily-ever-after.
Now we’re looking for the person who will show Petunia that she doesn’t have to survive anymore.
She can finally just be someone’s dog.
Petunia is currently being fostered in Houston, Texas, but she is available for adoption throughout the country. Her $600 adoption fee includes transport to her forever family.
If you think Petunia could be your next best friend and you’re ready to give this girl the very best life, apply today!
