Raquel is an eleven-month-old Anatolian Shepherd who came from a 40+ dog hoarding situation. The dogs were fed and kept reasonably clean, but their elderly owners were completely overwhelmed and unable to give them normal socialization. Raquel did not get the start she should have had, but she is very much on her way.
She is a big girl with an even bigger heart. Raquel is incredibly sweet, but still a little unsure of the world. She wants to be close, wants to trust, and is clearly trying. New things can overwhelm her at first, so she needs a little time to process and settle.
The good news is that she is not stuck. Raquel is making steady progress and is well past the completely shut-down stage. She is not as far along as the most confident dogs from her group yet, but she is gaining ground every day. In the right home, she is going to keep moving forward.
Because she did not grow up in a typical home, indoor living, leash walking, and everyday household activity are still part of her learning curve. She is not difficult. She is just inexperienced and a little uncertain. Patience, routine, and consistency will go a long way with this girl.
A confident, friendly dog in the home would be a huge help for Raquel. She would benefit from having another dog to follow, learn from, and use as a steady example while she builds confidence.
Raquel will be a large dog, likely well over 100 pounds when fully grown, so she needs a home prepared for that. A securely fenced yard is required. She is good with other dogs and fine with cats. Because she startles easily and is still building confidence, we are recommending a home with kids over 10.
