Disco was found on one of Chicago’s windiest days — which, in Chicago, is a meaningful distinction — grounded, thin, and too weak to get airborne. His leg showed the kind of irregular healing that suggests a break that had been managed without any assistance, the way street birds often do: alone, and as best they can.
He is in considerably better shape now. The leg has improved. His strength is back. And flight, which wasn’t available to him the day he was found braced against a Chicago wind with nothing left in the tank, has been restored. Disco has range again, and he is using it!
He is using it primarily to explore every available corner of his foster home, which he approaches with the dedication of someone who has opinions about the layout and intends to share them. He is communicative. He is curious. He has things to say about what he finds and he will say them to whoever is nearby and willing to engage.
His name suits him. There is something about Disco — the movement, the commentary, the general commitment to being perceived — that fits a bird named after an era defined by being a lot in the best possible way.
Disco the pigeon awaits a home that appreciates an exploratory, engaged pigeon who has already been through genuine hardship and emerged from it with his enthusiasm completely intact. He was found at his lowest, on one of the worst weather days the city had to offer, and he is now flying laps around a foster home and filing detailed reports.
Disco is back. And he’d like a forever home worthy of his comeback!
