Golden years are meant to be spent sun bathing in true leisure, eating the tastiest snacks and being pampered by your senior dog adoring humans who want nothing more than cuddles and a lap ornament at the end of the day! We really wish that Gertrude's senior years had started off that way but we're doing our best to make up for what she's been through now!
Gertie was found as a stray and was living with her finders for about a month before she was turned into animal control because they found she had mammary masses. When Gertie was surrendered, we immediately got a message about her and believe that no senior should spend their days in a concrete run. We also knew she had some medical concerns to address and that's our specialty!
When we picked teeny tiny Gertie up, she immediately melted into our arms. We won't lie, she was a bit of a mess and had clearly lacked grooming and medical care for quite some time. Fast forward a few months and she's a whole new lady! Both mammary masses were removed at the time she was spayed, with zero sign of metastasis found on radiographs or in her pathology report. One mass was cancerous while the other was benign. Gertie also was in dire need of dental care and had a dental cleaning that led to many extractions of rotten, painful teeth. She was started on pain medications, professionally groomed and feels like a whole new lady with a little sass to match! While her “special needs” are really the needs of any senior girl with a few more achy bones and arthritic changes, we know that she will need pain medications for the rest of her life to keep her as comfortable as possible. We also know that while senior pets steal our hearts in such special ways, they also come with a little more in the way of veterinary care and senior check ups...but this tiny girl is worth all the extra!
Now, Gertie is looking for a lap to call her own to live out her best years with humans who cherish her the way she’s always deserved! She doesn’t ask for much...comfy beds, a romp in the yard a few times a day and she really loves car rides, as long as she’s in your lap! ;-) Gertie does well with cats and dogs and shares her foster home with both. She would much prefer to be the center of attention if given the choice but is fine sharing her people with another calm, polite critter or two. Gertie may not have more years ahead of her than years lived, but she’s still got so much love, cuddling and old lady wisdom to share!
Gertie's adoption fee includes her spay, dental with extractions, mammary mass removals with pathology, senior bloodwork, microchip, heartworm/tick borne illness testing, vaccines, dewormings and flea/tick/heartworm prevention. If you have questions about this little lady, don't hesitate to reach out to us or send us an adoption application to come meet her!
