We have a little predicament on our hands. You see, Butterfly has a way of making people fall in love with her.
Her first family somehow missed it. She was part of a group of Shih Tzus being retired from breeding, but when the owner agreed to let us take the others, her puppies and Mama Butterfly weren't supposed to go with them. After a lot of negotiating, we were finally able to save her puppies—and were told they would “throw mom in as a bonus.” A bonus.
As if this girl wasn't their mother. As if her place beside her day-old puppies was negotiable. As if anyone could look at Butterfly and not immediately see what she was worth.
Thankfully, we got them.
Like her family members Tide and Dune, who have already found their forever homes, Butterfly needed a medical groom and to care for her puppies before she was ready to begin her new life. She eventually made the trip north with her puppies to her first foster home in Ohio—and that's where our predicament really began.
She almost stayed.
Ask any seasoned foster what “almost stayed” means, and they'll probably tell you: that dog is something special.
Butterfly was an extraordinary mom. She cared for her puppies with complete devotion, and when her mothering days were finally over, she didn't stop being wonderful. She simply became Butterfly “aka Baby, aka Butter”—the sweet, gentle, easygoing girl who was perfectly content just being near her people.
Now she's in Pennsylvania with her current foster family and guess what? They can't stop raving about her! (Yes, they are letting her spread her wings to find her furever home)
Apparently, Butterfly has a habit of making herself very difficult to give up.
Butterfly is potty trained, wonderfully sweet and gentle, and about as easygoing as they come. She doesn't need much to be happy—a soft bed, some sunshine, and a person nearby will pretty much do it. She absolutely loves being outside, especially when she can stretch out and sunbathe, and she is content simply being close to her people.
She gets along fabulously with dogs of all ages and sizes and is wonderful with kids. She's fairly quiet overall, although squirrels are apparently important enough to warrant a little commentary. She rides nicely in the car but is still working on her leash skills. She's also learning about the crate and can have some anxiety when her person leaves, but it's manageable and something her foster is continuing to work through with her.
Butterfly may be low-maintenance in personality, but Shih Tzus are not low-maintenance when it comes to grooming. Her future family should be prepared for professional grooming approximately once a month, with brushing and/or trimming in between, along with daily eye wiping to keep her comfortable and healthy.
Butterfly has spent enough of her life being valued for what she could produce. Now it's time for someone to value her simply for who she is.
And judging by how many people have already fallen for her, we're thinking her next family may have the hardest time of all letting this little girl go.
Butterfly is fostered in Reading (Berks County), Pennsylvania. She will be available to head home with a family on or after 5/30/2026 which is after she has had some time to heal from her spay/dental.
