DESCRIPTION

Grayson is a six-year-old, 10-pound Shih Tzu mix who joined us from the Queens New York Animal Care Centers. Having spent some time decompressing from the stress of shelter life, he is steadily coming out of his shell and discovering how great a dog's life can be.

Grayson is a sweet, sensitive, and cozy companion. He loves finding soft spots to nap, getting scratches and cuddles, and quietly keeping his people company. During his time in his foster home, he appears to be crate trained and pee pad trained. He is also quite an intelligent pup, and is already mastering “come” and working on “sit”.

Not only does Grayson's compact size give him an adorably puppy-like appearance, he also has a puppy-like demeanor in that everything seems brand new to him. He approaches food and toys with a youthful exuberance, but the outside world can still feel overwhelming for him.

While he handles a harness well and walks nicely on a leash, he gets extremely nervous around loud noises, busy crowds, and anything on wheels. So although he can and does eliminate outside, he is very reluctant to walk on busy sidewalks and currently prefers to use pee pads (which he uses perfectly). When startled, his natural instinct is to hesitate, stop walking, or attempt to flee. A secure, reinforced harness, quiet walking routes, and a family who allows him to process new sights and sounds at his own speed will be essential to his safety and progress.

Although Grayson may have missed out on some early socialization, he does not show food or resource aggression, is comfortable approaching other dogs calmly, and is non-reactive to cats. He is most confident when he is with other dogs, so a balanced resident dog in the home who will gently teach him social cues and doggy etiquette will be tremendous for his growth.

Because he appears anxious around young children, Grayson would do best in either an adults-only home or one with older, respectful kids. Although he will need an understanding, patient family who will provide a calm environment and gentle guidance, Grayson is an incredibly endearing and lovable little guy who is ready to become someone's very best friend.

Vaccinated for rabies, DHPP, and bordetella, heartworm negative, neutered and microchipped. Current on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.

To apply for Grayson, visit our website (www.waggytailrescue.org) for an adoption application. It is important to fill out an application as soon as possible for consideration, and we require a complete application for you to meet an animal. We are currently unable to respond to general email inquiries as an all-volunteer run rescue. If the dog is on our website, they are still available.

Waggytail Rescue CANNOT guarantee the exact age of any adoptable dog, or final size of any of our adoptable puppies. We rely on the information provided to us by veterinarians, shelters, owner surrenders and other circumstances bringing the dog into our rescue.

ABOUT: MIXED BREED DOG BREED

The mixed breed dogs, often referred to as mutts, are a diverse and unique group with a blend of different characteristics from various purebred dog breeds. These dogs come from a mixture of lineages, resulting in a wide range of sizes, coat types, and temperaments. While each mixed breed dog is distinct in its own right, they are known for their resilience, adaptability, and often have fewer health issues compared to purebred dogs due to their genetic diversity. Mixed breed dogs make wonderful companions for families looking for a loyal and one-of-a-kind pet.
