Meet Dewey

Dewey's story began with a call from a good Samaritan who had been watching a terrified, emaciated dog survive alone for more than a month.

He was hiding on a hill between a busy road and someone's backyard, scared and trying to disappear. Our team set a trap, brought him to safety, and hoped his microchip would lead us to a worried family searching for their lost dog.

Instead, the response was devastating.

The person connected to Dewey's chip told us not to bring him back. They called him “terrible” and made it clear they did not want him. But the dog we met was not terrible at all. Dewey had entered the shelter as a senior stray, spent an extended time in foster care, and after nearly a year in the shelter, was adopted into what should have been his forever home.

Instead, he was left to fend for himself.

Now safe in rescue, Dewey is decompressing and learning that people can be kind. He can still be nervous, but underneath that uncertainty is a gentle, loving boy who wants closeness, reassurance, and a person he can trust.

Dewey has been through more than any dog should, yet he still reaches for connection. The right family will not just give him a home—they will get to watch a dog who was left behind discover, little by little, that he is safe, wanted, and worth staying for.

With a heritage deeply rooted in herding and protecting livestock, shepherds excel at various tasks ranging from obedience and agility competitions to search and rescue missions. Their protective nature makes them excellent family pets, offering unwavering devotion and a natural instinct to watch over and care for their loved ones. In addition to their remarkable abilities, shepherds are often characterized by their distinctive appearance, including a sturdy build, alert expression, and a signature double coat that provides insulation and protection in various climates.
