Maya * 2-3 Years Old * 60 lbs
Meet Maya — a sweet, gentle girl who has been through more than any dog should have to endure.
Maya was found as a stray, extremely emaciated and exhausted after spending a long time wandering and foraging. We also believe she had recently had puppies. She was scared and tired when she arrived at the local shelter, but she was approachable — and it didnt take long for everyone to fall completely in love with her.
Now Maya is learning something she may have never really known before: what it feels like to simply be a dog who is safe, loved, and cared for.
Maya is a 23-year-old Pit Bull/Bulldog mix weighing about 60 pounds, and she is an absolute sweetheart. She can be shy and nervous when she first encounters something new, but once she realizes she is safe, she warms up quickly. And once she loves you... she REALLY loves you.
She is the definition of a Velcro dog. She wants to be wherever her person is, whether that means following you around the house, cuddling on the couch, watching TV, or giving you the best kisses imaginable. She loves meeting people and is extremely social once she feels comfortable.
Maya is also a smart girl who is discovering how fun it can be to learn! She already knows sit, come, no, and off, and she LOVES treats. She enjoys learning new tricks, lick mats, confidence-building exercises, riding in the car, hanging out in the backyard, and just being with her person.
Because Maya is still learning how to be a dog, she will need a family who understands that patience and confidence-building are important for her. New situations can make her nervous, especially walks. She may hide or whine when anxious, but with encouragement, she settles in and begins to enjoy herself.
Maya has done wonderfully with the people she has met, including teenagers. She has not been around small children, but we believe she could do well with respectful children. She has also met one dog and did extremely well, although introductions were kept controlled and she was not allowed to play off-leash. Slow, proper introductions with other dogs will be important. Cats are unknown.
Maya is potty trained and does well being left alone, although her foster recommends that her adopters take time to get to know her before leaving her for extended periods and provide her with enrichment. She has not been crate trained.
A securely fenced yard is required. Maya is incredibly strong and is currently kept on a lead with supervision. She can break a lead if it isn't secure, and because we do not yet know how she would behave behind a fence, her family will need to be committed to keeping her safe.
Maya isn't looking for a perfect home. She is looking for her person.
Someone who will give her time when something is scary.
Someone who will celebrate every little bit of confidence she gains.
Someone who will take her places and show her that the world isn't such a frightening place.
Someone who will let her be their shadow, their couch cuddle buddy, their adventure partner, and their best friend.
A family who works from home could be absolutely perfect for this girl. And a positive-reinforcement trainer experienced with confidence-building would be a wonderful bonus.
Maya has already survived the hardest part. Now she just needs someone to show her what forever feels like.
Maya is ready for her soulmate. Could that be you?
Maya is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, and is on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention.
Her adoption fee is $150.
