Casper - Mixed Breed Dog for Adoption

Meet Casper!
Casper was surrendered when his owner could no longer care for him, and now this sweet, low energy boy is looking for a soft place to land. His previous family describes him as social, affectionate, house trained, and a big fan of car rides and spending time close to his people.

My Ideal Home
Casper would do best in a calm adult-only home where he can continue healing and settle in at his own pace. He's looking for patient adopters who can give him stability, kindness, and lots of cozy downtime while he regains his confidence.

Good with Other Pets?
According to his previous owner, Casper has been friendly and outgoing with other dogs both on and off leash. At the shelter, he showed interest in greeting another dog through the gate, though interactions have remained limited while he focuses on healing.

Good with Kids?
We recommend an adult-only home for Casper at this time due to his discomfort with novel situations and handling while recovering medically.

Things to Know
Casper is currently recovering from ongoing skin issues and has been unable to complete a full handling assessment while receiving treatment. Even so, he has remained gentle with staff, takes treats softly, and continues to tolerate care and medical handling well. He can become a little timid in unfamiliar situations and may bark or growl at strangers approaching his family on walks, but overall he is described as an affectionate, easygoing companion who enjoys being near his people. Casper also loves car rides and already has great house manners.

Fun Fact
Casper may be named after a friendly ghost, but this Casper prefers cozy naps, car rides, and sticking close to his favorite humans.

A volunteer writes: Casper 🥰 8 year old Casper has spent the last 2 months in the shelter, much of it in a too small kennel in an overflow room. With few breaks from his living space, it's no minor feat that he's maintained his good nature. But he patiently waits for walks, and I think hopes for some butt scratches and affection from his human companions. His skin must be itchy, and it's scabbed over when we meet. His guardian reported that he developed skin issues 2 years ago and interventions from his vet were not successful and abandoned about a year ago.

Regardless, he's a little gentleman. He places his paws in our palms and watches us quietly until we produce his reward. He's got tall pointy ears atop a perfectly round face, with short little leggies adorned in white socks. He plays enthusiastically, and walks on a loose leash while sniffing.

Casper's guardian reports he's good with dogs and cats, and alerts to strangers but is friendly. He also did well with baths. You can meet this lovely boy at Queens ACC

My Boroughbreaker writes: Casper was such a good boy on our Borough Break! He's a super chill and laid back dog-he was not reactive at all to other people or dogs walking by or sitting near us (he only barked once at the bookstore/cafe). He was also more on the low energy side-after walking for a bit he was very happy to plop down on the ground and rest (in fact I had to coax him to get up when we needed to move to a different spot!). He was also pretty good on the leash and actually didn't pull much while we were walking (despite the note I received that he tended to pull). He also listened well to the "sit" and "paw" commands and always took the treats I offered him gently!
Casper did seem a little bit timid at first, but once he warmed up to me he was super sweet-it was the cutest thing when he offered his butt for scratches and when he playfully rolled around on the ground and accepted belly rubs.
