Say hello to our sweet little Huck!
This little peanut is 4 years old and about 40 pounds. He is crate trained and stays in a crate when his foster is out of the house. He is great with other dogs, people and even cats!
Huck has either been mistreated or was just severely neglected during the formative time in his life. He is very shy and timid when he meets new people or is in new situations. He does warm up pretty easily and is so happy to be rescued that he actually smiles at times. He has never tried to dart out the door or escape. He never digs holes or counter surfs. He’s been great with his foster’s dogs and cat, and he greets other dogs with no problem. He might be a little hesitant at first, but when he realizes no one is going to harm him, he’s wagging his tail and happy.
Huck is such a sweet boy who greatly appreciates receiving love. He’s shy at first and may even give a little growl when first approached, but the whole time, he’s wagging his tail hoping you’ll be nice to him. Huck is on guard only because he is used to people treating him poorly. He is always very hopeful that he will be petted and not hurt. Once he is comfortable, Huck even occasionally gets zoomies and will run around so happily.
Overall, Huck is pretty chill. He is most energetic in the mornings but by evenings he is ready to settle right down wherever you are.
Huck is 95% house trained but will need someone who is willing to be consistent with him and continue his training. Similarly, he doesn’t mind being on a leash and he doesn’t pull. However, he is easily startled and sometimes he will drop to the ground. He then needs coaxing to get going again. Huck is treat motivated so that helps. If you tell him, “It’s ok” and pet him gently, he quickly recovers and will move away from what startled him.
Huck has been a good boy not chewing on furniture, pillows or other items he should not have. He does love to tear up stuffed animals, and he often swallows pieces of the stuffed animal, so it is not advised for him to have soft toys. He loves hard chew toys and bones.
When Huck first sees you in the morning or after work, he is so happy he jumps in the air but not on you. He does not bark a lot. He will cry if separated from you while you are at home. He loves to sleep in his kennel near you at night.
Huck really needs another dog in his new home. He gets a lot of confidence from other dogs and would do best with a dog who is confident but not bullying. He loves people but may startle easily with small children so older kids are best.
Huck is a true diamond in the rough. He looks like a perpetual puppy and is so immensely grateful for being rescued. Huck does his very best to show you every ounce of affection. He will need someone who is kind and caring and willing to give him all the time and consistency he needs to feel safe and loved. He will be worth every bit of that time!
Huck is fostered in RI and is available for adoption on, or after, June 19th, 2026.
