For eight long years, Mabel knew what it meant to be unwanted.
An 8-year-old Golden Retriever mix, Mabel spent much of her life outside, used only for breeding. She knew neglect instead of tenderness, loneliness instead of companionship, and pain instead of comfort. When she was no longer useful, she was discarded as though she were nothing more than an old piece of furniture.
She arrived at the pound dusty, defeated, and hurting. Her body was tired from years of neglect. She suffered from arthritis, ear infection, and heartworm, and everything about her told a heartbreaking story of a life that had never given her much reason to hope.
Even the staff at the shelter looked at Mabel and decided to give her a few extra days, so that she could find her hero, for her to get a chance at love once.
That's when our rescue stepped in, determined to give Mabel something she had probably never truly known before: love.
Mabel found a foster, went to the vet, began treatment, and slowly, almost cautiously, she began to heal. But it wasn't just her body that needed healing. Her heart needed it too.
With patience, kindness, and lots of TLC from her foster mom, Mabel began discovering that humans could be gentle. That a soft bed could be hers. That she could follow someone simply because she wanted to be close to them. That she could play. That she could be silly. That she could finally, finally be a dog.
And what emerged was absolutely precious.
Mabel is a Velcro Retriever.
Once she realized she was loved, she decided she wanted to be wherever her person was. She follows her foster mom everywhere, soaking up every bit of affection she can get. She has even started playing with her foster sibling, showing everyone that underneath all those years of sadness was a sweet, loving girl who had simply been waiting for the opportunity to come alive.
Mabel may have been defeated in the past, but she is cherishing every moment now. And we want nothing more than to see her continue to discover what it means to be an ordinary dog.
To nap when she wants.
To stretch out in a soft bed.
To follow her humans from room to room.
To be included.
To be loved.
To finally be someone's girl.
Mabel is deaf, but don't let that fool you. This girl is incredibly smart! She has learned hand signals and is remarkably tuned in to what is happening around her. And, truthfully, she has also discovered that sometimes being deaf can be quite convenient when she doesn't feel like doing something. She has a little personality and isn't afraid to use it!
Mabel is also a sensitive soul. She doesn't particularly enjoy change, which is understandable after everything she has been through. What she needs now is stability, patience, and people who will let her settle in at her own pace.
And once she trusts you, prepare yourself for a whole lot of love.
Mabel doesn't bark. She doesn't destroy things. She isn't looking for chaos or adventure. She is perfectly happy simply being beside her people, giving love and receiving it in return.
Her foster mom is going away on vacation soon, and the thought of Mabel having to spend that time in boarding breaks our hearts. After everything this sweet girl has endured, we don't want her to experience another confusing change.
We want her to go home.
Not just somewhere temporary.
Not somewhere until something better comes along.
We want Mabel to have the forever home she should have had years ago.
A home where nobody expects her to earn her place.
A home where she can sleep as much as she wants, follow her people whenever she feels like it, and spend her days surrounded by the simple things she was denied for so long: comfort, companionship, kindness, and love.
Mabel has spent eight years giving everything she had and receiving so little in return.
Now it's her turn.
Her past cannot be changed. But her future can be.
We want Mabel to spend the rest of her life knowing that she is cherished. Knowing that she belongs. Knowing that when her human walks into another room, she can follow — because for the first time in her life, she has someone worth following home.
Mabel is ready.
All she needs is someone willing to give her the forever she has been waiting for.
