Some dogs are content to watch life happen.

Chip would much rather be part of it.

At 4 years old and just over 80 pounds, this handsome German Shepherd mix is incredibly intelligent, endlessly curious, and always paying attention. If there's something happening in the house or yard, Chip already knows about it. He's the kind of dog who wants to learn, explore, and be involved in whatever his people are doing.

One of Chip's funniest quirks?

He bounces.

Need to know what's happening on the other side of the fence? Chip has it covered. This guy can launch himself straight into the air like he's on invisible springs just to get a better view of the neighborhood. It's less about escaping and more about satisfying his curiosity—he just likes to make sure he isn't missing out on anything exciting. We joke that he was born with built-in springs instead of regular legs.

Chip thrives with structure, routine, adventure, and plenty of opportunities to use both his body and his brain. Walks, hikes, training sessions, puzzle toys, scent work, games, and learning new skills are exactly the kinds of things that make him happiest.

He's also very enthusiastic about mealtime. Food is one of Chip's favorite things in life, making training both rewarding and entertaining. If treats are involved, you'll have his full attention.

Chip is kid-approved and has done well with children, but because of his size, athleticism, and shepherd personality, he'll do best with an experienced adopter who understands working breeds and enjoys providing leadership, consistency, and continued training.

Like many German Shepherds, kennel life has been especially hard on him. He's an incredibly smart dog who doesn't always appreciate confinement and has been known to engineer a crate escape when he decides he's had enough. (Honestly, if Chip had opposable thumbs, we'd all be in trouble.) A 6ft+ secure, physically fenced yard is recommended, though his future family should know that he's athletic enough to surprise you with just how high he can jump.

We also believe Chip would thrive as the center of someone's world. While he may be able to coexist with another well-matched dog under thoughtful management, he will need an experienced handler to help set him up for success. He is not a fit for a home with cats.

Chip isn't looking for someone who simply wants a dog.

He's looking for someone who wants a partner.

Someone who appreciates a brilliant mind, laughs at goofy quirks, enjoys training, and understands that the very traits that make German Shepherds so incredible are the same traits that require time, commitment, and engagement.
