Lady is a beautiful 5-year-old German Shepherd, about 65 lbs, with a story that makes you wonder what her life looked like before she came to us.

We don’t know if Lady ever had a family. We don’t know if anyone ever loved her, tucked her into a warm bed, or told her that she was a good girl. But looking at the way she behaved when she first arrived, it seemed as though Lady had spent most of her life simply surviving.

She knew how to live near people, but she didn’t know how to live with them. She was used to taking care of herself, finding food, staying out of trouble, and keeping her distance. People were something to be cautious about, not something to trust.

When Lady first came to her foster home, her instinct was to run. Her foster mom patiently gave her time and showed her, little by little, that not every person was going to hurt her or abandon her.

And slowly, Lady began to change.

She discovered that human hands can bring food instead of fear. That they can pet you gently. That a home can be warm and safe. That someone can actually be happy to see you.

And Lady began to melt.
