Freedom joined Mattie's Place July 2 when she was deathly ill with her buyers, who purchased her from a backyard breeder and just days later tested positive for parvovirus.
They did not have the funding to support her medical care so she was surrendered to Mattie's Place.
Freedom was hospitalized for 1 week and thankfully, with medicated support, bounced back and is doing amazing with no further parvovirus symptoms.
Freedom will have her final round of vaccines in August, at the cost of Mattie's Place at our rescue veterinarian. She'll receive her spay in January 2027, again, at the cost of Mattie's Place with one of our rescue veterinarians.
If she requires BOAS surgery (nostrils and soft palate) to help her breathe better, as determined by a Mattie's Place veterinarian at her non-negotiable, contractual spay appointment, then that will also be completed at the cost of Mattie's Place.
Freedom is just a 2 month old puppy (born in May 2026) and weighed in at 5 pounds on discharge July 8th
She is expected to be a 20 pound "ish" adult French Bulldog.
French Bulldogs are amazing dogs, but they are a lot of work and have special breed specific requirements. Due to their flattened faces, they are prone to overheating and breathing issues, so special care is always top of mind, especially in the summer months. They are highly susceptible to heatstroke and cannot regulate their body temperature through panting effectively.
French Bulldogs are also known to be very confident and very stubborn, especially when it comes to training, so an adopter that is willing to work with a professional trainer is important.
Freedom is a great little dog and will fit into most lifestyles. Given she's so young currently, she will need someone home most often to help her with potty training and all the things puppies need in their early months of life.
Though not tested, she'll be fine with cats, dogs and kids. But given she is so tiny, the dogs, cats and kids need to be proven to be dog friendly.

Freedom is a sweet, gentle and confident little soul.
Freedom likes to explore and then remembers she needs to follow you either because you own a lap for napping, you are a source for food, you can provide cuddles or all 3. So she will be underfoot!
She is not afraid to tackle stairs
She wants to be your constant companion and values leisure time over play time.
Her energy level is in spurts.
She likes her puppy chews.
She is learning how to alert us with barks while being crate trained.
Her nap and bedtime routine requires a little coaxing with a treat to get into the crate before she settles. We have used baby gates to keep her safe from other rooms not quite puppy proofed. She does have separation anxiety, especially if she can see you while in her crate, and she will bark but eventually settle. We have used a light blanket covering 3 sides of the crate as a method at bedtime to help settle her and putting out all the lights. I sometimes play classical music as a cue that it is time for her to sleep.
She has 4 mini meals and devours every bit of kibble.
She is very food motivated. She knows the commands "come" and "sit".
She is a greeter. Freedom happily ran up to my husband and daughter when she arrived at our home. She will wait until you pet her or lift her up to carry her. Now, she's getting too used to being carried. We might be inadvertently creating a Diva.
Freedom has been spending a lot of leisure time on our deck. Her ears are little satellite dishes that perk up when the sounds of birds or neighbours catches her attention.
Need someone to snuggle up and read a book with? Freedom is your girl.
Freedom knows exactly what she wants, your lap. Have a cosy blanket for lap time, even better.
She is mostly quiet, rarely barks but has little grunts and whines and expressive chocolate brown eyes when communicating with you.

Mattie's Place does not deem any dog in our care hypoallergenic, allergy-free or non-allergenic. Unless you are willing to take daily medication to manage dog allergies, please do not apply to adopt because I can't risk a dog being returned due to allergic reactions.
