May 16th, this teeny tiny adorable little girl joined Mattie's Place from a Canadian shelter, where she was originally found as a stray.
Weighing in at only 1.90 KG | 4 POUNDS, she is small in size but has a big personality!
Aguila needs an adopter that understands the needs of a small sized chihuahua; inability to jump down from any heights, can be hesitant on certain stairs, fragility around small children and other dogs over 15 pounds, sensitivity to outdoor temperatures (especially in the winter) and most important can be at risk around birds of prey or coyotes on leash or in a backyard unsupervised.
Though tiny dogs can be much easier than large dogs, tiny dogs also come with their share of added care when considering adoption.
May 19th she went in for her spay, had a dental completed and got brought up to date on vaccine and parasite prevention. She is a healthy, estimated to be 8 year old dog with a given DOB: May 15, 2018.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE: chihuahua's can live up to 20 years old. They are one of the longest-living dog breeds and many chihuahua's reach their late teens or early 20s with proper medical care given throughout their life. So be sure when you're considering adoption, you are in an age range to see Aguilla through what we hope is another 12 - 15 years of life ahead of her.
Aguilla would be best in a home without young kids under 13 years of age due to her size. Visiting kids? Absolutely fine, supervised. A home without resident dog(s) over 20 pounds. Dog friendly cats only, as a cat could really hurt her badly.
Someone home most often, or someone that can take their dog to work, as she does have some separation anxiety, which is quite chihuahua typical as they are incredibly loyal dogs to their people and super sensitive.
Aguila will make an amazing companion to a suited adopter and will bring you day after day of smiles and love, that only a tiny dog can offer their human!
FROM THE FOSTER:
Aguila is very sweet and a gentle personality once she feels safe and comfortable in her environment. When she first arrived in foster care, she was understandably nervous and vocal (howls) for the first couple of days while adjusting, but after settling in she became calm, affectionate, and very easy to live with.
She is quiet throughout the night and sleeps comfortably in her crate. We leave the crate door open so she can access water or food if she wants, and she does very well with her routine.
Aguila is pee pad trained and has only had one accident indoors since arriving in foster care. She also goes outside for walks two to three times a day during daylight hours. She walks nicely on leash and enjoys exploring at her own pace. She seems to prefer walking on concrete, although she usually does her business on the grass.
She is comfortable being handled and carried and does not try to run away or pull excessively on walks. Aguila is especially comfortable with women and may take a little extra time to warm up to men or unfamiliar people, but she settles with patience and a calm approach.
She will occasionally bark at unfamiliar sounds outside the apartment or when strangers enter the home, but overall she is a very quiet and peaceful little companion.
Aguila has been a lovely foster dog.
