Winnifred - Corgi and Chihuahua Dog for Adoption in Toronto, Ontario

WINNIFRED

Corgi, Chihuahua
🇨🇦
Toronto, Ontario
September 3rd
female, small, senior

DESCRIPTION

Winnifred, estimated to be 8 - 10 years old and weighing in at 13 pounds, joined Mattie's Place from an Ontario shelter, where she was found as a stray.

She needed all her remaining teeth extracted, as her mouth was in really bad condition and this wasn't in the shelter budget, so she was transferred to Mattie's Place.

She had her dental completed August 20th and is recovered and doing great!

Because she is now toothless, she is eating Tom & Sawyer commercial cooked dog food and they have sponsored her food during her stay at Mattie's Place. Her adopters will be offered a 30% discount for her lifetime should an adopter choose to keep her on this food.

Winnifred did have some issues with being picked up and we weren't sure if these were trust issues or medical issues, so we did digital imaging and on her and had no findings for IVDD, arthritis and/or hip dysplasia. We can rule out arthritis and hip dysplasia via x-ray. We can even rule out boney issues like narrowed spaces in the spine, or hardened mineral spots around the discs or bone abnormalities that shouldn't be or would be causing her pain or discomfort.

More advanced imaging such as an MRI or CT Scan can tell us more if there are indeed back issues, but we'll monitor her for now in foster care and if there are indictors of pain still, we'll get our specialists involved.

To date, her foster is not seeing any pain or mobility issues. She just doesn't want to be picked up by someone she doesn't know and will try to nip -- without teeth. She knows what she does and does not want and isn’t afraid to express it.

I think the shelter vet mistook her nipping for pain and gave her a wrong diagnosis of IVDD/arthritis/his dysplasia as we've ruled all that out through
our rescue vet.

Winnie will do well in a quiet home without young kids. She would likely prefer to be a solo dog which she would find less bothersome. She is being fostered in a condo with a resident dog and is also fine, but I think she'd find more joy in a different adoptive situation.

Winnie is quite active and loves her walks, so an active adopter is important.

An adopter with dog experience, that is home most often will be best for Winnie as she does enjoy companionship of her human.

Winnie is a great senior girl with lots of living left to do with an active adopter in a home that understands dogs and some of the quirks they come with.

FROM THE FOSTER:

Winnie takes time to warm up, but once she does she is the sweetest old lady.

She is independent so sometimes she wants to nap next to you, some where near by, or in another room. Once she warms up you'll get lots of take wags and kisses if you want them.

When she sees her harness she gets very happy and has recently started hopping around in excitement to head out for a long walk.

She will tolerate another dog, probably even dogs, she just doesn't want to play with them. She doesn't impede on you giving the other dog attention, she patiently waits her turn.

She is house broken, but will take some time to adapt to your schedule.
