DESCRIPTION

CHEESE 3 years old 10 lbs Professional Two-Legged Acrobat

Some dogs come to us needing a new home. Others come to us needing a second chance at an entire life. Cheese is the latter.

This tiny, ten-pound Chihuahua was found walking on two legs along the narrow shoulder of an 80-mph expressway, boxed in by concrete barriers. We have absolutely no idea how he got there. We don't know how long he'd been there. And we really don't want to think about what would've happened if one Good Samaritan hadn't spotted a very small dog in a very big, very dangerous place.

What we do know is that Cheese had already survived more than anyone realized.
Cheese is missing one of his back feet. By the time he came to us, the injury was old and healed, and thankfully, it doesn't cause him pain. His other back leg works just fine. Cheese simply chooses not to use it much. Because apparently when life takes your foot, you become a tiny circus performer and walk around on your front two instead.

And before you start feeling sorry for him, please know that Cheese would find that deeply unnecessary.

This little dude GOES. Uneven terrain? Fine. Riverbeds? Been there. A few stairs? No problem. Launching himself off the human bed he has obviously claimed as his own? Absolutely. His unconventional transportation system doesn't meaningfully slow him down.

And somehow, his personality is even more impressive than his acrobatics.
Cheese is perfectly house trained, has phenomenal recall, and is the definition of a Velcro dog. We haven't even bothered crating him because... he simply hasn't given us a reason to. He wants to be wherever his person is, preferably touching them, and he is extraordinarily grateful for every ounce of love he receives.

Despite whatever happened before he found us, Cheese apparently decided not to hold it against the world.

He loves big dogs. Small dogs. Cats. Parrots. Pigs. Humans. Probably your weird neighbor. Basically, if it's alive, Cheese is willing to discuss friendship.
He can be sensitive about other dogs getting near his feet—and honestly, we think he's entitled to that boundary. There was clearly trauma associated with losing his foot, so we'd like his future family to continue giving him a little grace and advocating for his personal space.

He's generally a quiet little guy, although he will absolutely summon you from another room when your presence has been requested. He'll also let you know when a stranger is at the door because, despite weighing ten pounds and routinely walking around like a wheelbarrow, Cheese takes home security seriously.
Cheese is fully vaccinated, microchipped, has been treated for heartworms, and will be neutered by May 11.

We don't know Cheese's first story. We don't know who failed him, how he lost his foot, or how a ten-pound dog ended up balancing on two legs beside an expressway. But rescue isn't always about figuring out the chapters that already happened. Sometimes it's about making damn sure the rest of the book is better.

Cheese got his second chance. Now he just needs the person who will make it permanent.

Apply to adopt Cheese at CRAPrescue.org/application.

Adoption process: After your phone screening, we can schedule a meet and greet/the start of your foster-to-adopt trial. All adoptions have a 2 week minimum foster-to-adopt trial to make sure that the pet is the right fit for your home, and vice versa. Cheese's adoption fee is $300, which would be due after the foster-to-adopt period. If you are located outside of Texas, we offer to-your-door transportation and have so many happy families as references. We are very transparent about the process so feel free to ask any questions.
