Mayo

Bichon Frise

Small Adult Male

Mayo is fostered near Listowel.

Mayo is a gentle, affectionate, 4 year old and 14 pound Bichon. This lovely little companion is looking for a home where he can be close to his people. He becomes a true velcro dog, follows you everywhere, happily snoozing beside you while you work, and always ready for cuddles, belly rubs, and couch time. He would do best in a home with someone home most of the time or someone who works from home as he can be vocal when left alone. We are looking for a home for Mayo without shared walls willing to slowly help him become accustomed to being alone.

Mayo came to us as a surrender as his family was unable to continue to care for him.

He is not a fan of crates and has only ever used them on car rides, he does whine a bit in the crate but eventually settles and lays down and sleeps.

When he first arrived into foster care he marked in the home and had occasional pee accidents. After being treated for a urinary tract infection and being neutered he is no longer marking or peeing in the home. He lets his foster know when he needs to go out by going to the door.

He is not big enough to jump up on the bed or the couch but doesn’t mind being picked up with support under his belly to sit beside you on the couch and he especially loves sleeping with his foster in their bed.

When he first arrived into foster care he did hump his dog bed repeatedly which can be a sign of anxiety and a dog trying to self-soothe themselves. He does still occasionally try to hump his foster’s arm now but can be redirected to playing with a toy instead. Once he learns some new cues like sit or down, those can also be used to ask him to do a behaviour incompatible with humping.

He will alert to and alarm bark at critters like cats and bunnies who dare to walk by his patio or at the squirrels trying to bury their nuts in his garden. He does tell them in no uncertain terms to remove themselves from his yard.

On his walks he is friendly with the neighbours and is only a little hesitant to go and ask for pets but once they pet him then it’s full on rub his belly time. He has met several dogs on his walks and been very respectful with each one-no growling or lunging just a respect sniff, then an invitation to play. As well, on his walks, he has met various children as he is fostered near a public school and has shown he is friendly with them as well.

He does not have access to a fully fenced yard but does love to go out and sniff the yard and does like to go on his walks. He is a little hesitant at night as he is not a fan of the dark.

Due to time constraints, we cannot respond to every email asking for more information on a dog.
