Beni is a former Ridglan Farms beagle who spent the first five years of his life in literal hell. He is now discovering what it means to be a dog. Every day is a new adventure, and learning what life should have been all along.
When Beni is happy, he spins. When he's REALLY happy, he spins while wagging his tail. He loves people, kids, other dogs, and most of all, cuddling on the couch with his foster mom. He also has a fantastic way of asking for affection: he simply stares deeply into your eyes until you figure out that cuddles are required. And he does this a lot.
Beni is a bright, curious boy who is learning something new every day. He's working on sitting, coming when called, leash skills, and building confidence.
He is afraid of leashes, but his foster works with him daily and he is improving. Steep staircases can also be intimidating, although once he has time to adjust, he's willing to try. He's even figured out how to walk around the couch on his hind legs and can launch himself onto the couch with a little assistance. Yes, Beni is basically part beagle, part tiny acrobat.
He's also learning that people leave and come back. Beni has separation anxiety, but there has been noticeable improvement recently. When his foster mom leaves, he may bark and howl at first, but he settles once he hears her car leave. His overall anxiety has also decreased. Considering what his life was like before being rescued, being nervous is understandable.
Beni is curious and loves figuring out how things work. He is a very smart boy. Drawers? He can open them. Cabinets? Sometimes. Chairs? Apparently they're movable. Remote controls? His sworn enemy.
He can be a danger to books, boxes, chair legs, and when left loose, so he stays safely in the pup room when his foster mom leaves. He's also managed to chew a foster sibling's collar right off, so apparently canine fashion is also not safe around Beni. Because of this, his future home will need to be thoroughly beagle-proofed.
The good news? He is learning, redirects well, and loves puzzle toys. Fromm Adult Small Breed kibble is one of his favorite snacks, especially when he has to work for it.
Beni needs a patient, dog-savvy family who understands that he is still learning how to be a pet. He would love a confident dog sibling because he learns a lot from other dogs. He loves children and friendly people. Cats are unknown. He also needs a family willing to continue working on his anxiety, leash confidence, and general nervousness. He is not a “perfect” dog, but he is making wonderful progress.
And then there's the sweetest part: Beni wants love. He seeks out hugs and cuddles, loves lounging beside his foster mom, and is slowly discovering that hands can be gentle and homes can be safe.

Beni is neutered, microchipped, on preventatives, and working on housebreaking. He is not a crate dog and does best free-roaming in the home when appropriately managed. He should always be walked using a harness.
Beni is currently on a diet that has helped stabilize his sensitive tummy, and his adopter should be prepared to continue that plan initially. His veterinary team also has a plan for managing his history of vaccine reactions.
Beni spent the beginning of his life without freedom, family, or the chance to learn what being a dog was all about.
Now he's learning.
He's learning that leashes aren't scary.
That stairs can be conquered.
That people leave and come back.
That couches are for cuddling.
And that sometimes, the best place in the whole world is right next to your person.
He's a little goofy. A little mischievous. A little complicated. And completely worth it.
Beni is looking for someone who will be patient with his progress, laugh at his antics, celebrate his victories, and show him that the good life he missed out on is waiting for him now.
Albert's Dog Lounge is a specialty rescue focusing primarily on senior and special needs dogs.
