Cinnamon - Australian Cattle Dog Blue Heeler Dog for Adoption in Hampton, Virginia

CINNAMON

Australian Cattle Dog Blue Heeler
🇺🇸
Hampton, Virginia
June 5th
female, small, baby

DESCRIPTION

When Cinnamon arrived at Animal Aid, she didn't act like a puppy.
She was silent and scared, a literal ball of fear. This six-month-old Heeler had come from a home where she was neglected and mistreated. Her rescuers knew she was on the verge of being dumped, and they stepped in to get her out. They couldn't keep her, but they made absolutely sure she got somewhere safe.
We sat quietly with Cinnamon and let her move at her own pace.
Little by little, she started reaching back toward the world.
She stretched her neck out as far as it could go just to sniff the people nearby. She started looking around the room. She noticed the toys. She sampled the food. Then she leaned into us. She curled up in a volunteer's lap.
And then somebody handed her a squeaky toy, which changed the entire trajectory of the day.
Apparently, Cinnamon had never been informed that toys could squeak. Once she discovered this, she started bouncing around the room like she suddenly remembered she's a puppy and ridiculousness is her full-time job.
She's still timid, but every day we see more of the dog she's meant to be. She's learning to trust and starting to show her affectionate, playful side. She clearly wants to feel safe, close to her people, and part of a family.
She's also a Heeler, which means she comes from a breed specifically designed to organize large mammals by nipping at their heels. This is excellent if you are moving cattle across Australia. It's somewhat less popular with small children and their little friends. Because of that, we think Cinnamon would do best in an active home without young kids -- ideally with people who can give her plenty of exercise, structure, play, and mental stimulation.
Cinnamon survived the hard part. Now she needs somebody who will make sure she never has to go through it again.
