DESCRIPTION

Pepper, now a 2.5 year old dog, landed in an Ontario shelter at 6 months old. She was transferred to a rescue (not Mattie's Place) and adopted. When she was no longer a fit for her adopter, she was transferred to Mattie's Place with approval from the originating rescue.

She weighs in at 65 pounds.

Pepper is a good dog but lacked a lot of training and structure as a puppy and carries a lot of puppy behaviour still as an adult dog.

Pepper is VERY high energy, so will need an adopter that loves to get out and adventure and have their canine companion by their side.

Pepper hates the vet and hates getting her nails trimmed. She has a vet appointment with our Mattie's Place vet in May to get her vaccines updated that are coming due and get her some parasite prevention. She will be muzzled and have some sedative medication on board to take the edge off her and I will update this profile to let you know how she did with this support for her.

Pepper is a great dog and will do best with a dog savvy adopter, that loves a smart higher energy dog that is immensely loyal. A quiet home is best for her, without a lot of people coming and going. A dog of equal size or larger would be a great companion for her.

No cats. No kids.

Pepper is deserving of a dedicated adopter that will love her as fiercely as she'll love you right back and equally loyal.

I had Pepper in a board & train program for 1 month to fully assess her when she came into care at Mattie's Place. She was then transferred to a foster home where she's doing amazing.

Feedback from trainer & foster noted below .....

FROM HER TRAINER (that she lived with for 1 month in a board & train):
Inked K9 Krew Professional Dog Training & Pet Services

Pepper has a bit of stranger danger at first, but as long as you don’t force interaction and give her space, she warms up quickly. Food is absolutely the way to her heart, and once she trusts you, she is incredibly engaged. She loves to work and genuinely enjoys being told what to do — she’s the kind of dog that thrives with guidance and structure.

Pepper crates like a dream and truly relies on her crate as a safe space to decompress. It’s an important part of her routine and helps her feel secure.

She’s a higher energy girl, but she also has a great off switch. I have found that she does very well with a schedule, including having set quiet times in her crate. She will happily cuddle up, roll over for belly rubs, and soak in all the affection. She’s very sweet and affectionate with her people once comfortable.

Pepper is obsessed with stuffy's and loves a good game of tug. Play is a great outlet for her and an awesome way to build a relationship with her.

She can be a bit picky with her meals and may only eat once a day, but she’ll happily work for high-value rewards, which makes training both fun and effective.

Pepper loves playing with other dogs and does well with cats. That said, proper introductions and not rushing the process are key to her success — she does best when she’s given time to settle in and understand her environment.

With the right structure, patience, and continued training, Pepper would make an incredible adventure buddy or a fantastic intro sport dog.

FROM PEPPER'S FOSTER:

Pepper is a girl looking for her leader. She is high energy and can be anxious so needs a calm, confident person to show her how to relax.

Pepper is still learning all the manners she needs to be the best girl, but she tries really hard and is a quick learner.

Pepper is fully housetrained and crate trained. Her crate is a good place for her to decompress if she gets overly excited.

Pepper loves to chew and play! If she doesn't have a toy to chew on or toss around she will probably be looking for some trash or Kleenex to chew instead.

She is not destructive.

Pepper is great with other well behaved dogs and is good with new people given a proper introduction.

Pepper would love to be your hiking/outdoors buddy. She loves the water and she travels well in the car, even long distances and has lots of energy to keep up with whatever adventure you have in store.
