Sage is a very sweet Tabby/Tiger kitty with handsome markings and eyes. He is quiet, yet also playful. He first came to shelter 9/9/22 at age 13 weeks and was adopted 9/17/22. Sadly he had to be returned to the shelter in July, 2026 when he was 4 years old. Sage's owners have a baby that developed a rare skin condition so they had to re-home their pets. He was used to living with large breed active dogs, other cats, a baby and toddlers so is used to a lot going on in a home. The other cats he once lived with who are also up for adoption are named Clove & Poppy Seed. He is vaccinated and neutered. Call (434) 374-8076 or email lakecountryspca@yahoo.com. His former family has this to say about Sage, "Sage is a 4-year-old neutered male brown tabby who takes his position as man of the house very seriously. He's independent, opinionated, protective, and quite convinced he's responsible for keeping everyone else in line. Hell greet his people at the door as though he's checking them in, patrol the house for any bugs foolish enough to enter his territory, and even sit outside the bathroom to stand guard.
Underneath the strong-man persona, Sage is a tremendous cuddle bug. He isn't interested in being carried around or climbing into a lap. His preferred form of devotion is curling up tightly beside his person, often serving as the perfect foot warmer. He wants to be close while maintaining the fiction that he is a very independent gentleman.
Sage is wonderful with children. When the baby cries, hell come check on her. He's extraordinarily tolerant of toddler enthusiasm and frequently puts himself right in the middle of playtime, stretching out on the floor and inviting interaction rather than retreating to another room. For an adult cat, he's remarkably interested in being part of family life.
He's also extremely chatty and has strong opinions, including the conviction that unattended bread belongs to him. Croissants are a particular weakness and should not be left unguarded!
Sages protective instincts run deep. During pregnancies in his family, he somehow seemed to know almost immediately and appointed himself provider, attempting to bring home a steady supply of squirrels and birds. The sentiment was touching. The deliveries were considerably less appreciated, and his cat-flap privileges had to be temporarily revoked.
For all his bravado, Sage is a sensitive soul. He thrives on familiarity, predictability, and a peaceful home. He takes considerably longer to warm up to unfamiliar animals and finds stressful experiences like car rides and vet visits especially difficult. Because of this, Sage would likely be happiest as the only cat in a stable home, where he can relax and devote himself to looking after his people.
Sage has a poultry allergy and needs a poultry-free fish- or beef-based diet. He does particularly well with wet food. He also has a known heart murmur, so minimizing unnecessary stress is important. And the man of the house has standards: Sage likes his litter box kept fastidiously clean.
Sage is being rehomed only because of a new baby's medical condition. This decision has nothing to do with his behavior or temperament. He is a deeply loved member of the family, and the hope is simply to find him a stable, loving home where he can settle in and stay for good.
Sage is a wonderful contradiction: fiercely independent and deeply attached, self-appointed protector and enormous baby, dignified gentleman and shameless croissant thief. Once he decides you're his family, he takes the job seriously."
