Coven has officially been with Fur All Kittys for ONE. WHOLE. YEAR. And we are really starting to take this personally.
One whole year, do you know what that means? She has lived through kitten season. She has watched cats come in, cats move around, cats get adopted, cats get sick, rooms get rearranged, and the general daily circus that is a rescue overflowing with cats. And through all of it, Coven has been here. Waiting. Which is honestly baffling, because LOOK AT HER.
She was an adorable little kitten when she first arrived. She should have been someone's baby. She should have been sleeping on a couch, staring out windows, making biscuits on blankets, and generally running a household by now. Instead, she grew up here, and that's the part that hurts. Because Coven didn't do anything wrong. She wasn't difficult. She wasn't unfriendly. She wasn't some impossible-to-place cat. She is actually one of the sweetest, funniest, most wonderfully chaotic cats you could ever meet. She was just... overlooked.
Then, just when we were already wondering how this girl was still here, life threw her a curveball. Bittersweet doesn't even begin to cover it, but maybe (just maybe) there was a reason she didn't find her forever yet. Because Coven turned out to be one of the unlucky few cats born with the genetic mutation of the feline coronavirus gene that leads to FIP. One night, we noticed something was very wrong. She was abnormally round. Not “someone has been hitting the treat buffet” round. Something is terribly wrong round. Her abdomen was filled with fluid. At the emergency vet, they drained approximately 400 mL. That is an absolutely bananas amount of fluid. So, Coven went home to foster care with Mama MaggieTM and began the long road to recovery.
In foster, Coven's personality really came shining through. Because apparently, after spending her entire life in a rescue, what Coven really wanted was...A HOME (shocker!). A window? A-Mazing. A couch? Purr-fect. Constant attention? FINALLY. Other cats? Excellent. A foster family waiting on her every move? Yes, this is the LIFE. She was seriously so ridiculously happy to be in a home, that even while her body was fighting a serious illness, she just soaked up every bit of love she could get.
Treatment for FIP is 84 days. And Coven would like everyone to know that she supports saving her life in theory. However, she does not support daily oral syringes of medication. Coven is stubborn. Unfortunately for her, so is her foster mom. What followed was 84 days of pharmaceutical warfare, several high-speed chases, and two ladies who absolutely refused to lose. There were stares from across the room that suggested Coven was carefully calculating the logistics of a murder-suicide pact here. Well. 84 days of shenanigans later, and, Coven beat FIP!!
Now she's one year old, healthy, happy, and more than ready to finally get the part of her story she should have had from the beginning: A home of her own. She is the kind of cat who will talk to you like she has very important things to discuss. She is a professional biscuit maker. She loves a good window view. She loves hanging out with her foster siblings. She loves attention. Oh, and we cannot forget her most spectacular feature: THE TAIL. Coven has a wonderfully hypermobile tail that seems to have abandoned all conventional cat-tail expectations. That thing just flops completely flat across her back.
She knows what it feels like to be loved. She knows what a couch feels like beneath her little butt. And we desperately want her to keep all of that.
Permanently. Let's not let her go back to the shelter and wait more, no no, we need to finally get this girl a home! And bonus feature: Coven has a tiny polydactyl admirer named McKay, who is already completely, hopelessly, ridiculously in love with her. She adores Coven more than anything in this world. So yes, there is potentially a ready-made little duo here featuring one FIP survivor with a rogue tail and one extra-toed kitten who thinks Coven hung the moon.
They absolutely do not have to be adopted together. Coven can have her own family, and McKay can have her own family. BUT. If someone happened to look at these two and say, “You know what? Let's take both of them.” We would probably need a moment. Because how cool would that be?! And because we want Coven to have the chance she should have had a year ago, her foster mom will personally sponsor Coven's adoption fee IF you adopt Coven and McKay together. Not because they have to go together. But because they would love it, and Coven deserves the happy ending she has been waiting for.
Look. Coven has already spent a year waiting for someone to see her. She shouldn't have had to wait this long. She shouldn't have had to grow up in a rescue. She shouldn't have had to fight FIP. She shouldn't have had to spend 84 days plotting the downfall of her foster mom. But she did. And she came out the other side as the sweet, ridiculous, affectionate, window-loving, biscuit-making, hypermobile-tailed little weirdo she always was at heart.
Coven is magic. The good kind.
