What my friends at ACC say about me:
I have lived with cats in my previous home.
I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.
I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.
I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am.
Butter is laying on top of his den, eyes wide, pupils dilated, ears forward and lip licking as the kennel door is opened. He leans forward to sniff the assessor's hand, giving it a gentle head bunt before pulling back. With some soft talk, he head bunts their hand again, flinching on initial contact but leaning into some petting on the head and cheeks, extending and stretching his paw out in front of him. He is slowly coaxed down from the top of the den, greeting the assessor at the front of the kennel. Butter allows and leans into all petting but does continue to flinch and periodically lip lick throughout the interaction. When noises occur in the hallway, he tenses and cranes his neck to observe the direction of the sounds. He is refocused with soft talk and petting and is able to be easily picked up, remaining calm when he is held. When placed back into the kennel, he remains at the front, still allowing all petting but occasionally flinching back.
Butter tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that he go to a home with some cat experience preferred and be well counseled in fearful cat behavior.
