Basil - Domestic Short Hair Cat for Adoption in New York, New York

Basil is standing in the back of her den, pupils dilated, eyes wide, and body tense as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened and she is softly spoken to, Basil pokes her head out of the portal exit, head bunting the side wall of the den and leaning forward to sniff the assessor's hand. Whenever sounds occur in the room, Basil will freeze before lip licking and ducking back into her den. For most of the interaction, Basil is halfway out of the den, allowing and leaning into all petting but hesitant to fully exit. She is offered crunchy treats and quickly begins eating them and is able to be coaxed to the front of the kennel. She remains slightly tense with a tucked tail but continues to tolerate all petting, leaning in when she is pet on the head and cheeks. Basil is tolerant of pickup, but lightly squirms and is a tiny bit tense, but without further issue. When she is placed back, she walks back into her den, but is able to be coaxed halfway out once again with soft talk and leans in for more head and cheek pets.

Basil tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that she go to a home with some cat experience preferred and be well counseled in fearful cat behavior.
