When Nutella arrived, he was days — maybe hours — from not making it. Abandoned and left to fend for himself, he came to us severely emaciated and dehydrated, the kind of shape a bird doesn't usually walk back from. It took four of our medical volunteers, pooling their expertise and refusing to give up on him, to bring him all the way home. Look at him now!
He's a West of England Tumbler, a fancy domestic breed, and he wears his name well: deep cocoa brown warming into rich hazelnut and caramel along his wings and those elaborately feathered feet. He is, by every account, a brave and curious bird — the sort who leans in to see what's happening rather than shrinking from it, which is remarkable for someone who had every reason to give up.
Tumblers were bred by people, for people, which is exactly why Nutella can't survive outdoors on his own. Those handsome muffed feet stay healthiest on clean, dry footing. What he needs now is an indoor home where his curiosity has room to roam and someone to be curious about. He fought hard to still be here. He's ready for the good part!
