About Common Musk Turtles

The common musk turtle, known scientifically as Sternotherus odoratus, is a small freshwater turtle native to North America. These semi aquatic turtles are recognized by their dark brown or black shells and distinct yellow stripes on their heads. Common musk turtles are characterized by their musky odor, produced as a defense mechanism when feeling threatened. They are omnivores, feeding on aquatic plants, insects, mollusks, and small fish. These turtles prefer shallow, slow moving waters with dense vegetation, where they spend much of their time basking and foraging.
