Canelo - Yorkshire Terrier and Silky Terrier Dog for Adoption in Southlake, Texas

Meet Canelo, an adorable 5-year-old Yorkie. Canelo came to our rescue in very bad shape. He was abandoned, leaving him to survive years on the streets and unfortunately it really showed. He was underweight, struggling with allergies, had an upper respiratory infection, and a bad case of mange that then turned into a severe skin infection. His skin was the worse case we have ever seen firsthand. After months of medical treatment trialing meds, diet trials, and around the clock care we finally saw results and his transformation.

Canelo has spent the past 3 months with a medical foster. She has worked with him to get him to a good place. Since he spent many years on the streets his foster also has been working hard on training to set him up for success. He does best in a structured environment or would benefit being adopted by someone with yorkie/silky experience. He does well on a leash and loves to walk! There is a little bit of room for improvement but compared to when he first started going on walks it is a night and day difference. He has been exposed to other dogs but due to his initial medical status he had to remain in quarantine for quite some time. He gets very excited to see other dogs and has a dominant personality. He will be doing a trial at doggy daycare to get a full report. We do think he is potty trained since he waits until he is scheduled to go outside. He will bark to let you know he needs to go.

At first the vet thought he was a senior dog aging him at about 10 years old but after receiving medical care the vet realized that he has to be at least half that number because he is very lively and youthful. The vet suspects that at some point in his life he was confined to a kennel and was biting at the bars out of stress which damaged his teeth leaving him with some missing and fractured teeth. He does have a full dental appointment set for September 10th for a cleaning and extracting teeth that have been fractured so he will be completely vetted by that point. He is vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, and current on heartworm/flea/tick prevention.

Due to Canelo's traumatic past, he does have some separation anxiety and general anxiety, so he is currently taking medication that helps him tremendously. If you work from home that would definitely be an added bonus. He does have food allergies so he will require a special diet (It is about the same price as a standard high-quality diet). There is still a potential he will need his allergy medication or just seasonally. Canelo was definitely robbed of the first part of his life, but he has fought to survive and deserves a chance. He is extremely loving and overall a great boy with a loving personality. Any person he meets he is extremely happy to greet them and give them a big kiss.
