Nate & Gracie: They Lost Their Home, But They Still Have Each Other
Sometimes a rescue story begins with heartbreak. But when you meet Nate and Gracie, you would never know it from the way they embrace life and everyone lucky enough to meet them.
Nate is an 11-year-old Doberman and Gracie is a 9-year-old Weimaraner. They have spent their lives together, are deeply bonded, and now they need one very special home willing to give them both the soft landing they deserve for their golden years.
Their journey to GLWR is a difficult one.
Nate and Gracie were brought to a local shelter by their owners with a request that they be euthanized. A human child had joined the family, and when the dogs were not properly introduced and integrated into the changing household, their owners decided they could no longer keep them.
Thankfully, the shelter director looked at these two wonderful senior dogs and said no. Instead, the shelter reached out to Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue.
GLWR does help bonded pairs, but a Doberman isn't exactly our usual clientele. We rescue Weimaraner's. Yet it quickly became clear that taking Gracie meant taking Nate, too. These two have already lost the home and family they knew. We weren't going to ask them to lose each other, too.
And we are so glad we said yes.
Because as heartbreaking as their story is, Nate and Gracie are not defined by what happened to them.
Look at their pictures and you'll see the dogs we've come to know: happy-go-lucky, sweet, loving and affectionate seniors who seem to approach each new day with enthusiasm. They love people, do well with other dogs, enjoy car rides, and have a wonderful way of endearing themselves to just about everyone fortunate enough to meet them.
They are housebroken, crate trained and healthy for their ages, with no significant health or behavioral concerns. At 11 and 9, they're well past the puppy nonsense and ready for the good stuff: comfortable beds, leisurely days, car rides, affection, companionship, and someone who appreciates just how special senior dogs can be.
Right now, Nate and Gracie are being cared for at a boarding facility in Lewis Center, Ohio. They are safe and receiving good care, but a boarding facility is not where we want these two spending their golden years. With the unusually high volume of dogs GLWR has taken into rescue over the past several months, we have had to rely on boarding when foster homes simply haven't been available.
Our greatest hope is to find Nate and Gracie their forever home together. But we would also love to find them a foster home where they can leave boarding behind and enjoy the everyday comforts of being part of a family again.
They aren't asking for much.
A couple of comfortable beds. A good car ride now and then. Someone to follow from room to room. A hand reaching down for an ear scratch. A warm place to nap. And the security of knowing that when they wake up tomorrow, they'll still have each other.
Nate and Gracie's first family may have decided there was no longer room for them.
We're looking for the person or family who will show them that there is.

Their story came frighteningly close to ending at a shelter.
Instead, let's make sure the best chapter is still ahead.
