Meet Layla

Some dogs make you stop in your tracks — and Layla is one of them.

When this sweet girl first arrived at the shelter as a stray, a volunteer immediately noticed her. In the middle of the commotion of intake, Layla was simply calm, gentle, and sweet. She greeted her new people with soft eyes and a happily wagging tail, as if she was just waiting for someone to notice her.

Once she was out of her kennel, Layla's personality really started to shine. She walks nicely on a leash, enjoys getting outside, and takes treats with the gentlest little manners. She was perfectly happy to have a bow put on her and then proceeded to pose like she had been waiting her whole life for a photo shoot. She has that irresistible combination of sweetness and charm that makes people smile without even trying.

Layla seems to have a wonderfully easygoing personality. She has been relaxed and appropriate throughout her time at the shelter, has done well during her temperament testing, and has been easy to handle. Staff have consistently described her with relaxed body language, soft eyes, and a softly wagging tail. She has also been neutral when passing other dogs in the shelter, generally going about her business rather than getting worked up by the dogs around her. As always, individual introductions are important, but what Layla has shown so far has been very encouraging.

She's also a bit of an attention-seeker in the most endearing way. During her walks, she has occasionally been vocal when she wants some attention — because apparently, once you've discovered that people are there to love you, you might as well make sure they don't forget!

But perhaps the most special thing about Layla is that she has remained gentle and trusting despite the uncertainty of everything she has experienced. She is the kind of dog who seems to blossom simply because someone is paying attention to her. Give her a leash, some treats, a little affection, and maybe a cute bow, and she is happy to go along with it.

And Layla's rescue itself is something special. When she needed people to step up for her, a community rallied. Nearly $2,000 was raised for her care in less than three hours, giving this sweet girl the chance to leave the shelter and start over. Layla is officially safe and will be arriving at LOLAs Rescue on October 7.

Layla is approximately 3 years old, 50 pounds, and heartworm low positive. She will need a foster who can care for her through the duration of her heartworm treatment and give her a comfortable place to recover and decompress. Her foster family will have the first opportunity to adopt Layla if they decide she is the right fit for their home.

Layla has already had an entire community stand up for her. Now she gets to discover what it feels like to have someone standing beside her every day.

She's sweet. She's gentle. She's ridiculously cute in a bow. And she is very, very ready for her people.
