Saffron (Saffy) starts off with her new people very shy and shut down for the first few days, staying in her kennel most of the time and timidly coming out for meals and potty. Give her about 3 days and she will be a different dog!
She has become best friends with our two other "littles" and being part of a dog pack seems to give her confidence and joy. We believe that she should have at least one other dog in her permanent home to help her confidence continue to grow. At 14 months old, we expected more puppy energy, however, she is happy just hanging out with her foster mom (mostly) who works from home. Good news is that she adores her foster dad as well and sleeps through the night between the both of us.
She is pretty much potty trained with very regular backyard time and has occasionally used puppy pads that we have around the house when she just can't wait any longer. Walking on a leash has been quite the adventure, but with almost two weeks behind us she is growing confident in walking with her mentor dogs and fosters. She is a leash "puller" and just super excited to see everything in front of her (and she wants to be the leader of the when she just can't wait any longer. Walking on a leash has been quite the adventure, but with almost two weeks behind us she is growing confident in walking with her mentor dogs and fosters.
She does tend to get underfoot easily (she has a silly habit of herding her fosters down the stairs), but we have adapted as we know she will be right on our heels. We haven't left her alone uncrated for more than an hour (while we were in backyard) and she did great. She has not been a fan of her crate after her initial 3 days. Saffys first foster family observed that this tiny girl had some bigger feelings when it came to food around her foster siblings. While this behavior has not been seen since, its important to note that as she settles into a new home and decompresses, she may show some resource guarding tendencies. If they do arise, its important that they are worked through using positive reinforcement.
Saffy loves a soft bed and sometimes a soft lap. She just wants to be near her dog mentors or her fosters as often as possible.
