MEET MELVIN!
Part dog, part mop, part grumpy old, complete delight: meet Melvin! Melvin was found as a stray before being brought to a local shelter and estimated to be somewhere around 12 years old. It’s been so fun getting to know this silly, quirky little guy and now it’s time to help him land the home he deserves!
Besides being a senior with an obvious love of naps, Melvin shows no intentions of slowing down (outside of aforementioned nap time). He's sweet, wonderfully quirky, has a lot to say. Melvin loves everyone he meets: people, little dogs, big dogs. He hasn’t had a chance to meet cats since joining the rescue but we have a feeling he’ll approach them the same way he approaches most things in life: toddling up to them, doing a quick inspection, deciding they’re not all that interesting, and moving on about his day. Walks are Melvin’s favorite thing in the world. Once he’s got that warm concrete under his paws, he’s ready to GO! He can only see out of his right eye due to scar tissue from previous trauma, so he tends to stay on his person's left side, marching through the neighborhood like a sentient mop on a very important mission. Melvin is also potty trained!
In his foster home, Melvin wanders, explores, bonks into things, steps in water bowls, climbs on furniture, walks across laptops in use, and treats every room as his own. Confinement is not for Melvin. He likes the freedom to roam his kingdom, and furniture, electronics, and the laws of physics have never stopped him. Then there's his voice. Melvin is a commentator with opinions, producing everything from goose honks to what we assume a llama sounds like, all in the raspy voice of a man who's smoked a pack a day since 1972. He prefers to deliver this commentary while standing completely still. Why? Melvin contains multitudes.
Melvin has received a full veterinary workup since leaving the shelter. He has been diagnosed with collapsed trachea, not uncommon for small breeds, and is on a daily cough tab to manage symptoms. He must also be walked on a harness rather than a neck collar. Melvin has early kidney disease, caught during an abdominal ultrasound, and has been stated on prescription kidney food. Melvin is currently taking anti-seizure medication to manage tremors and gabapentin to help with old man aches and pains. Melvin recently received a badly needed dental which left him two perfectly wonky front teeth, just adding to his charm.
So in summary, Melvin is both low and high maintenance. He's friendly, independent, and happy doing his own thing, but his adopter must be comfortable managing his medications. We know nothing about Melvin’s past but we do know he’s deserving of an amazing last chapter!
Melvin is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love. He is neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Interested in adopting him? Visit cityofelderlylove.org to complete an online adoption questionnaire!
