Meet Dango!
Dango means “dumpling” in Japanese, and this adorable three-legged Shiba Inu is every bit as sweet as his name! It’s pronounced DAHN-goh.

Dango came to us after a difficult start to life, weighing just under 3 lbs. He was a teeny baby that had been discarded from a puppy mill as he had a leg deformity. He was examined by our vet team and some spine and leg anomalies were found and it was determined that he needed a leg amputation but he had to gain some weight first. He just recently had the leg amputation surgery while in rescue and he has made an incredible recovery. Nothing will stop this little firecracker of a puppy. Shiba’s are described as sturdy, muscular, and agile dogs with a bold, confident personality to match and Dango hasn’t let having 3 legs stop him in anyway. He still has, and will always have, a bit of a twist in his spine but it doesn’t cause him any issues and doesn’t need any intervention and just adds to his uniqueness. Now, at 4mths old and almost 10 lbs, he is happy, healthy and absolutely loving life! He will mature out at around 20lbs, being a compact, medium sized dog.

Dango is playful, curious, confident and full of Shiba spirit. He runs, explores, plays and keeps up with his foster siblings as though he has four legs. Smart, independent and mischievous, he loves being part of the action. Like many Shibas, he has a big personality in a little body. He is surprisingly quiet but occasionally treats his humans to an excited growl or a dramatic Shiba scream when he has something to say! Anyone interested in Dango needs to be fully informed on Shiba Inu’s and know exactly what to expect with this breed.

Dango absolutely adores other dogs and thrives in a pack environment. He loves playing with his foster siblings, and happily joins them on walks and adventures. A home with another friendly, playful dog would be great as long as the other dog in the home is one that would enjoy a pestering puppy that wants to play and play and play , but he would also do well as the only dog in the home as long as his family is able to provide him a lot of attention and interactive play time. A securely fenced yard would also be ideal but not a necessity. Dango can do stairs, but due to his being a tri pod a home where he has to negotiate a long flight of stairs to get in and out of the home constantly wouldn’t be ideal. He is well suited to many living arrangements but we need to keep in mind that Shiba dramatics does create some noise at times when he feels the need to express himself.

He has been well socialized in a variety of environments, including hockey rinks, patios, cafés and malls. He loves people and can do well with children who understand his boundaries and interact with him gently. Any children in the home should be 6yrs of age and older and of a gentler nature. Dango can’t take rough handling or play due to his structure so ideally older children/teens are best for him. His adopters should continue positive socialization as he grows.
Dango is intelligent, curious and highly motivated by treats. He knows his name, sit, lie down and come, and enjoys learning when properly motivated. Shiba Inus are known for their independent nature and stubborn streak. Dango will need an experienced dog owner who understands the breed and can provide patience, consistency, positive reinforcement and clear boundaries. Enrollment in obedience classes will be required, along with a commitment to ongoing training and socialization.

Dango is a rockstar in his crate! He settles easily, sleeps 8–10 hours overnight and happily stays crated for a few hours during the day, provided he has an appropriate bathroom break. Being a puppy he is not suited at this time to those who are away from the home for a full workday. He needs bathroom breaks more regularly while this young. He is progressing well with house training and has no accidents when his routine is followed. However, he isn’t yet asking to go outside independently. When out of his crate, he should be taken outdoors every 45–60 minutes. Consistency and patience will be important as he continues learning. He also loves car rides and would make a wonderful adventure companion. Dango is an enthusiastic eater and currently enjoys two meals daily. He will need a consistent feeding schedule and a high-quality puppy diet to support his growth.

He is healing beautifully from his amputation and moves remarkably well. He enjoys walks, plays with his foster siblings and doesn’t let having three legs slow him down.

Dango is up to date on vaccinations and will need to be neutered as part of his ongoing care. His family must follow veterinary recommendations to support his continued recovery, mobility and long-term health. Anyone interested Dango needs to live within 1hr of Cambridge, Ont as he must be returned to our vet later on to be neutered. He will be adopted out on a contract that stipulates this and it is mandatory. This is covered in the adoption fee.

Dango’s future family /person needs to be ok with shedding. Shiba’s are pros at it! He will need regular brushing to keep this manageable and his people need to be ok with some dog fur on their clothing!!

Dango’s beginning wasn’t easy. He arrived weighing just under 3 lbs, faced the loss of a leg and has already overcome more than most puppies ever will. Today, he is a confident, affectionate and entertaining little character who loves his foster siblings, adores the humans he meets and embraces every adventure. Dango needs a family who appreciates the unique characteristics of the Shiba Inu breed, understands the commitment of raising a puppy and is ready to help him continue learning and growing. In return, they’ll have a spirited, loving companion who reminds us that a difficult beginning doesn’t have to define your future.
Three legs. Almost 10 pounds of pure Shiba spirit. Endless love. That’s Dango!
