Avery is a 6 year old, 10 pound bundle of love! Avery is a brown and cream Shih Tzu and an absolute gem. She has the sweetest personality and is very loyal and will be a cherished family member.
Avery ‘s prior owner couldn’t continue to care for her and surrendered her to a vet clinic and we were contacted to take her in. Avery has truly been a joy to foster and has adapted quite well. Avery was said to have severe itchiness and was seen by multiple vets about this with no issues found, and in her time in foster care we have seen no issues with itchiness either so we feel that this was something predicated from the home she was living in prior. This would be something her new family will need to continue to monitor and be prepared for allergy medication costs if needed. Avery also requires daily brushing and regular professional grooming to maintain her beautiful coat. Her new owners will need to be committed to brushing her thoroughly and getting her in for professional grooms.
Avery would be best placed in a quieter home where there is not a lot of hustle and bustle, and someone who is home for a good part of the day. She does get nervous of loud noises and unfamiliar sounds. Avery would not like to share her home with young children, but quieter teens would be just fine. Avery would be happy in a home as an only dog where she would get your undivided attention. She is a very loyal companion and will follow you everywhere. She would also do well in a home with a calm little companion dog brother. She desperately wants to be friends with her foster brother cat and would enjoy a dog friendly cat in her forever home. She will lick his nose and they both share security duties together at the front window. He does however draw the line when Avery tries to share his bed with him. Avery has been exposed to another small dog in the family and got along well
Avery is excellent at walking on a leash. She does take her time to observe her surroundings and take life at a slower pace. A couple of nudges and she carries on. She still seems to be tentative on her walks so she would do well on walks in less busy and quieter areas, not busy streets. It seems she wasn’t walked much in her prior home so more exposure to the world around her is needed.
Avery is a quiet little girl but her expressions are very animated. When you are talking to her she tilts her head and perks her ears and appears to know exactly what you are saying. Her beautiful brown eyes are so expressive. She will let you know exactly what she wants which is usually to remind you its dinner time and more treats please. She loves to sit on your lap or by your side. Snuggles, kisses and belly rubs are her favourite.
Now that Avery has had her dental work we are seeing her playful side with her toys. She has one special toy she hides every day and only she knows where she hides it. When we say where's baby? She goes and finds 'baby' from it's hiding place. Avery is fully house trained and will always let you know when she wants outside. She sleeps in her crate at night and travels very well in her crate in the car. Avery has only spent very short periods of her time during the day in her crate. She would not do well being left for a full work day. Avery is a mature well behaved sweet girl who can be taken anywhere. She is the perfect houseguest.
Avery is not an outdoorsy girl. She prefers the comforts of home taking life at a slower pace. A warm bed/sofa catching some rays, laying in front of the fireplace, people watching out the front window, supervising her humans, cuddles and belly rubs. She is happiest with her humans. She needs to be handled gently and does not always like to be picked up. She comes to you on her terms.
If you are looking for a BFF Avery is your gal. She is a loyal, loving companion that will always be by your side. A true gem!
