Mavis, 2 years old, spayed female, Shepherd mix, weighs 55 pounds. She is in a foster home in HOUSTON, TEXAS and is able to transport once an adopter is matched.

Mavis started showing up at an elementary school. One of the teachers noticed her and began feeding her. She was not able to take her home, but began a journey to find a foster and a rescue to help Mavis. It took many months, but a group of people came together and she's been thriving in foster care ever since!

Meet Mavis — the gentle, easygoing sweetheart who’s ready to bring calm, love, and quiet joy into your home.

Mavis is one of those rare dogs who just fits. With a low-to-moderate energy level and a naturally calm demeanor, she’s happy to join you for daily walks (she can go up to 3 miles!) and then relax at your side or stretch out on the cool floor—her preferred lounging spot, even when a comfy bed is nearby.

She absolutely loves other dogs and thrives in a social environment. Mavis currently lives with multiple dogs ranging from under 10 pounds to 100 pounds and gets along beautifully with all of them. She’s respectful, reads social cues well, and knows when to disengage if another dog isn’t interested in playing. Whether she’s following the pack around or handing out gentle kisses, she’s a wonderful canine companion.

On leash, Mavis is a dream. She walks close by your side, is easily redirected if she notices squirrels or stray cats, and has excellent manners. The only thing that gives her pause are sewer grates and drainage holes—she’ll politely avoid them and keep moving. She may also startle if approached suddenly from behind, so a calm, predictable environment helps her feel her best.

In the home, Mavis is as easy as they come. She’s fully house-trained, does well in a crate (including overnight or during the workday), and has great manners when left alone. She’s not destructive and coexists peacefully with other dogs. She doesn’t show any food aggression, though she does think all treats are fair game if given the chance!

Mavis has been around children, including an 8-year-old, and has done wonderfully. She’s gentle, quiet, and affectionate—especially once she feels safe. While she may be a bit shy at first with new people, she warms up quickly and enjoys being loved on.

She hasn’t been tested with cats, and based on her interest in squirrels, a cat-free home would likely be the best fit.

Mavis is smart, knows how to sit, and is eager to continue learning. She’s not particularly interested in toys (yet!), but she does love catching treats and will happily show off her skills.

More than anything, Mavis is looking for a home where she can feel secure, loved, and part of the family. She would do well in a variety of homes—whether with other dogs or as a solo companion—as long as she has someone who will give her the patience and affection she deserves.

If you’re looking for a loyal, low-maintenance, and incredibly sweet companion, Mavis might just be your perfect match.

Please note our process starts with an application. If we think you might be a good fit, we will reach out to coordinate a phone interview. This is followed by a video call with the foster home. Virtual home visit, personal and vet reference checks are required to complete the process. Transport is included in our adoption donation.
