Calzone is a handsome, sturdy boy with a unique look and personality to match. With his chunky cheeks, curly tail, and thoughtful expression, he carries some classic Shar-Pei traits—he’s observant, a bit reserved at first, and doesn’t always wear his emotions on his sleeve. Coming into care as an unclaimed stray, Calzone took some time to decompress, but he’s since warmed up nicely and now enjoys affection, outdoor time, and play with familiar people.
Around new people, Calzone can be cautious. He may approach to say hello, but prefers to build trust at his own pace rather than jumping straight into interaction. Once comfortable, he accepts pets and handling well, even tolerating things like ear cleaning and examinations with patience. He especially loves a good scratch above his tail—his happy little “tip taps” say it all.
Calzone is a strong, powerful dog with a moderate to high energy level. He enjoys being outside and exploring his surroundings, but will need continued training to improve his leash manners, as he can pull with significant strength. Because of this, he’s best suited to an experienced handler who can provide consistent training, structure, and confidence-building. With time and guidance, he has great potential to become a well-mannered companion.
In terms of other animals, Calzone has shown appropriate and calm behaviour when meeting another dog, choosing to disengage on his own and explore independently. However, due to his size, strength, and more subtle communication style, he would do best as the only dog in the home for now, with opportunities for controlled, positive socialization. He has tested well with cats and may be a good fit in a feline-friendly home.
Overall, Calzone is a loyal, independent-spirited dog looking for someone who understands his need for patience, structure, and respect. In the right home, he’ll thrive as a devoted companion with a playful side and a soft spot for the people he trusts.
