Abilene is currently in a foster home in Houston, TX and is eligible to transport to an adopter as soon as one is lined up.

Meet Abilene!

Abilene is a 3 year old female pointer mix who is fully vaccinated, microchipped, spayed and ready to find her forever home. Abilene currently weighs 65 pounds.

Abilene is the total package: sweet, gentle, goofy, and ready to find a family of her own.

Her story began on the side of a Houston highway, where she was found very pregnant and in need of help. Within 24 hours of being rescued, she gave birth to 13 puppies. She was an incredible mom, patiently caring for every one of her babies. Now that her puppies are weaned and finding homes of their own, it's finally Abilene's turn to be the center of someone's world.

Abilene is initially a little shy when meeting new people, but she warms up quickly and blossoms into a playful, affectionate companion. Once she trusts you, her goofy personality shines through. She loves cuddling on the couch, following her people around, and being part of whatever is happening. Despite everything she has been through, Abilene approaches life with joy and optimism. Watching her gain confidence and discover how fun it is to simply be a dog has been amazing.

Abilene loves other dogs and would thrive in a home with a canine companion. She gains confidence from having another dog around and enjoys spending her days playing with her foster siblings. When she plays, she loves to run, wrestle, and use her oversized front paws, which she seems completely unaware of, making her play style especially adorable. She has never shown any signs of aggression toward other dogs and remains calm and friendly when encountering them on walks.

Abilene has such a calm and gentle nature. While she hasn't been exposed to cats, we truly don't foresee any issues and we are more than happy to cat test her for any serious potential adopter.

Abilene has a wonderful medium energy level. She's the perfect combination of couch potato and adventure buddy. She enjoys daily walks, playing with other dogs, and spending time outdoors, but she's equally happy curling up next to you for a relaxing evening at home.

Abilene is a dream on leash. She walks calmly right beside you, rarely pulls, and genuinely enjoys getting out for walks. Abilene is fully house trained and has never had an accident in her foster home. Abilene has shown no food aggression or resource guarding behaviors. She even lives with a foster sibling who can be protective around food and simply ignores the behavior.

Abilene may be a little anxious when first adjusting to a new home, which is understandable given everything she's experienced. However, she does very well when left in a dog-proofed room with plenty of chew toys and a good walk beforehand. She also does well in the crate if she needs to be crated.

Abilene can be shy at first, but warms up with a little patience. Seeing other dogs confidently interact with new people helps her feel comfortable more quickly. She has shown no aggression toward strangers, including men. Abilene has not been around children in her foster home, but based on her gentle temperament and calm nature, she is expected to do well with respectful children.
