Meet Toby!

Toby is a sweet, gentle, easygoing boy who has many wonderful qualities to offer his future family. He enjoys being with his people, playing with his toys, going for walks, and simply being part of the household. Since returning to foster care, we've learned that Toby needs some extra management and patience when meeting unfamiliar people.

- Low energy and laid-back, but enjoys running and playing when the mood strikes
- Follows his people around and loves being included
- Great with dogs and happily initiates play
- Excellent house manners and keeps his area clean
- Displays good potty manners in foster home. Routine is key.
- Sleeps peacefully through the night
- Great leash skills-walks nicely without pulling
- Rides calmly and comfortably in the car
- Loves plush toys and chasing toys
- Takes treats very gently
- No food or toy aggression observed
- Easy to handle for baths, drying, and grooming
- His beautiful coat can mat easily, so regular grooming will be important

Things to Know

Toby does not do well meeting strangers. When unfamiliar people approach him, he may bark and attempt to nip or bite. This behavior can also occur when someone unfamiliar enters his home. Because his reactions can be unpredictable, a home without children is recommended. Toby will need a family who understands his boundaries and is committed to carefully managing introductions and visitors.

Medical Note: Lyme positive*

Toby is a loving, well-mannered companion with a lot of wonderful qualities. His future family will need to understand and respect his discomfort with unfamiliar people and provide appropriate management around visitors, but once he knows and trusts you, Toby is a sweet boy who loves being part of his family.

*Lyme positive. Treatment is typically 28 days of doxycycline (an inexpensive antibiotic). With this disease, a dog may always test positive even if treated. The adopter is responsible for treatment, including cost. Its always a good idea to plan to keep your dog on a joint supplement for life.

Expect a response within about a week; please check your spam folder. As we're 100% volunteer-run, your patience is appreciated!

Requirements And Donations
- Required Adoption Day Items: A martingale collar and a non-retractable leash (available for purchase at ODHS).
- Adoption Donations: Puppies (under 1 year): $375; Adults: $275; Seniors (age-dependent): $175; Select dogs: $500. We accept cash, debit, and credit cards.
- Adoption Radius: Within 350 miles of Fredericksburg, VA. A $50 out-of-state fee applies.
- Breed Identification: Dogs are listed as "Mixed Breed" unless formal documentation is available.

- Visit our adoption center at 3602 Lafayette Blvd, Fredericksburg, VA 22408 during adoption hours: Wednesday 5-7 PM; Friday 6-8 PM; and Saturday 10AM-4PM.
