Clove - Mixed Breed Dog for Adoption

My foster writes: Clove is so ready to be a full time loyal, dedicated companion!
As a five year old gent he is in that sweet spot of calm shadow buddy around the house but has energetic puppy bursts at playtime! He also loves attention but not needy and can go full couch potato after a long walk!
Easy breezy on the leash while walking, can go long distance without issue and still curious when out & about, he even checks in with you for a pet while on longer walks!
He's so silent around the apartment; the only noises you hear are of him readjusting his lying down position!
Friendly to new people; open to petting saying hi!
Clove's personality is really engaged & enthusiastic while being chill the majority of the time; he can really match the energy of the room so I could see him being suited to a variety of different types of house holds.
Despite being in the shelter long term he is so bright, interested and full of affection.
Clove will bring so much to a home and make someone fantastically happy as you companion.

Clove is an incredibly affectionate and goofy guy who just wants to be by your side in whatever you do! His favorite thing to do is lean into you for scratches (his ears are silky soft), even falling to the floor and flipping upside down in order for you to get his belly. He's incredibly smart (knows to sit, shake both paws, down), is housebroken, and loves to sploot around the house.
He's a quiet companion in the home and will check in on you during the day. When I have been in the office, he has been able to settle for a few hours and is immediately ready for a cuddle session once I come back! When it's time to go out, Clove sits super politely for you to put his harness on.
He still has plenty of playful puppy energy, always ready for a round of tug with a rope. Clove is also good about boundaries -- he knows what toys are his and can easily be redirected with treats and play!

Meet Clove!
Clove arrived to us as a stray with no ID. He's a sensitive, shy sweetheart who prefers to take his time connecting - he often approaches on his own terms and enjoys coming for pets when he feels ready. Clove is thoughtful and steady, and he's participating in our Shelter Scholars mat work program to help him decompress and build confidence in busy or new settings.

My Ideal Home
A calm, predictable adult-only home where a patient adopter can continue confidence-building work with slow, gentle handling. Clove does best with predictable routines, gentle enrichment, and gradual introductions to new people and situations. Training that focuses on cooperative care, impulse control, and loose-leash skills (and use of appropriate equipment like a front‐clip harness) will help him thrive.

Good with Kids?
No - Clove would do best in a home with only adults. He can be fearful and has nipped when frightened, so we recommend no children (under 13) while he continues to build confidence.

Good with Other Pets?
Unknown history with household pets. In shelter assessments he has ignored dogs in crates and remained calm during some introductions, though he can hold a tense frame during new encounters. Slow, controlled, supervised introductions are recommended and may help him feel comfortable around other dogs.

Leash Manners
Clove can be strong on leash and is known to mouth or leash-bite at times. He would benefit from loose-leash training, impulse-control exercises, and redirection with high-value treats or toys. Techniques like stop-and-go, direction changes, and a front‐clip harness will be useful while his handler builds engagement and focus.

Overall Health
Healthy overall; neutered and microchipped, and receiving routine veterinary care while in our care.

Behavior Determination
Experienced Adopters - Clove is sensitive and can show fearful or anxious reactions when stressed. He needs an adopter who understands fear-based behavior, can move slowly, avoid sudden approaches, and follow a behavior plan that includes desensitization, enrichment, and cooperative handling. This approach will help reduce anxiety and build his confidence over time.

Other Fun Facts
Clove is soft-bodied and affectionate once he trusts you - he often leans into gentle touch and takes treats nicely. He enjoys mat work to settle his body and mind, and he can be playful with toys (he sometimes grabs a toy and keeps it). Because he prefers to call the shots, many of his best moments come when you let him come to you for attention. His adoption fee has been reduced to help him find the home he deserves.

My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Clove was a super silly and sweet boy! Clove was happy to lay on the couch and nap for a few hours. He was cuddly and loved getting pets. After some rest he was ready to play and got a burst of energy, he loved chewing his toy and playing tug! Clove was also excited to go on a long walk - he pulled on the leash and was intrigued but dogs and squirrels, but didn't bark or react to people. Clove was a great fun affectionate boy!!
