Meet Skipper - the cutest and silliest puppy that will keep you laughing!
Skipper is a 4-month old bundle of energy in a fuzzy, large package that is growing quickly. Weighing in at 30 lbs already, he is slated to be a large adult dog. Despite Skipper's heartbreaking start in life abandoned as an emaciated stray, he is an extremely happy and easy-going pup. Every day for Skipper is a great day and everyone and everything in his world is something to play with. This includes socks, the roll of toilet paper, and as many pairs of shoes he can get to. You won't need to spend any time wondering which dog toys Skipper might like, because every new toy is the best toy that Skipper has seen.
Skipper is very outgoing with all new dogs and people he has met while in foster care. He physically takes on his 55 lb foster sister with no hesitation, enjoying games of chase, body slamming, and bitey-face. Skipper is quite mouthy as he is starting to teethe, so the people and other dogs in his life will need to continue teaching him what is appropriate behavior. Other dogs in the home will need to be tolerant of non-stop puppy energy, and humans in the home will need to be willing to keep their belongings off the floor.
Skipper is currently living with an 18-year old, dog-savvy cat and doing quite well. If they are in the same room and she is out-of-reach, he completely ignores her. But he does need constant supervision and coaching when she is at his level as he wants to play and chase and might inadvertently hurt her due to his size. If Skipper goes to a home with a cat, he will need a lot of coaching, guidance, and constant supervision to learn what is appropriate. However, he appears to have no prey-drive and simply wants to play.
Skipper is fully crate trained and will literally jump into his crate if a cookie is involved. He is doing very well with potty training and understands he needs to go potty outside. He will signal vocally if he needs to go outside, but because he has a lot to say about many things, sometimes these signals are confusing and an accident happens. But he is working very hard and now regularly goes 6 - 8 hours at night in his crate without needing to potty.
Skipper is incredibly smart, eager to please, curious, and treat-motivated which makes him a dream to train. He already understands (although can have selective memory of) the following words: sit, leave it, drop it, off, crate, ouch (which we use when he's mouthy), let's go potty, do you want a cookie. He is working on walking nicely on a leash and has done well riding in a car. He has even done well getting his nails trimmed as long as his mouth is occupied (because he tries to eat the nail grinder). The sky is the limit with what Skipper can master in a consistent training environment.
Skipper is great with yardwork and will happily help you with excavation projects (he digs), weeding (he eats grass), and pruning (he eats flowers). He will take the lead on pest management as he loves eating bugs and stomping on ants with his huge puppy feet. He lives in a home with an unfenced pool and is respectful of the pool's edges and is recently showing an interest in getting in the water on the top step. We think he will be a great water dog when the weather gets warmer!
In the evenings, when Skipper has had plenty of playtime and exercise, he turns into a snuggling and sweet bundle of soft fuzz and cuteness. He loves cuddles and having his belly rubbed.
Skipper is deserving of a loving family that will continue with his training and will have patience for his puppy exuberance. If Skipper sounds like the perfect match for your home, don't hesitate to complete an adoption application today!
