Meet Angus

5 years old • 37 lbs • Chocolate Lab mix

Angus is a gentle, loyal boy who has come so far. After a difficult start to life, his tail now wags freely—and it's the sweetest sight.

He's house trained, incredibly smart, food motivated, and eager to please. Angus is sensitive and responds best to calm guidance. He may bark to alert when someone new arrives, but with reassurance he settles quickly.

He loves other dogs and would thrive with a playful canine companion. He enjoys sunshine naps, zoomies, bird-watching, and being told he's a good boy (it truly means everything to him).

Angus is ready for a patient, loving home that will continue building his confidence and remind him every day that he is safe and loved.

Here is a note from Angus's previous foster to his new family

"Dear new family,

Thank you for adopting me. I have been waiting a really long time. My name is Angus, and I am a very good boy. I'd love it if you could tell me that every day. I spent the first three to five years of my life thinking I was a bad dog.

I don't like to remember those times, but my foster mom, Amber, could tell I'd been beaten and had witnessed someone I loved being hurt too. I just cowered and trembled and stayed outside. I was too scared to come inside. Sometimes she'd have to pull on my leash kind of hard to get me inside. Forgive me if I hesitate at the door; every now and then, I forget that it's okay to be an indoor pet. It helps if you let me go in front of you. Then I can do my job as a loyal companion and lead you to safety.

I know I am lucky to have you and guess what—you are lucky to have me! Underneath the layers of fear that have almost all dissolved, I am all love and kindness.

Amber says I have high emotional intelligence. I think she means that I comforted her a lot when her dog Maxi died. Every time she cried, I knew to rest my head or paw on her lap and look into her eyes so I could let her know I was sharing her feelings. That's how loyal I am. She often told me I was super smart and curious because I'd watch her closely, listening. I do understand a lot of what you are saying and showing on your face.

We'd listen to the birds together every morning, and she laughed when I tilted my head to hear the newest bird songs. I'd even sit next to the bird bath to listen and watch them come and go. I would never, ever hurt one. I even wagged my tail and tried to play, but they always flew away. I have been told I am gentle.

I know not to do my business in the house. I used to mark, but I learned not to do that in 2 days! Amber says I am so smart and care so much about being a good boy that I correct easily. I get scared when people yell NO, but the minute I hear someone say EhEhEh, I know it's time to stop! It only takes a few EhEhEh's, and I stop the naughty thing forever. My foster mom also says I am food motivated. Isn't everyone food motivated? I love a tasty snack after breakfast; my favorite is one of those jerky treats that's shaped like a stick.

I bark when I hear something suspicious because it's my job to alert and protect you. Sometimes I bark when someone I don't know comes into the house. That's because I know what love is now and I want to protect you. If I go on and on too long, just say my name firmly (not meanly) and then go EhEhEh. I might bark again to be sure you're okay; please remind me, and soon I will be sniffing that person and letting them pet me.

I love other dogs and would really love a playmate, if not a few. I am also learning that I like cats. I love laying in the sun, and zooming in circles when we play. I wag my tail a lot now; it used to be tucked under my belly all the time. I am still figuring out what a leash is. At first, I ran away when I saw a leash; now I get excited because I know a walk is coming! Amber has a disability, so I pulled a little too hard for her, but my foster dad could walk me okay. I hope you can help me walk better on a leash. It's the best way to go to the dog parks and meet all the dog friends I don't know yet!"
