Meet Ben — A Gentle Soul Looking for His Forever Home

Ben is a sweet, timid boy with a heart full of love and so much appreciation for the safety and comfort of a home. He may be a big dog, but deep down, he’s still a scared little puppy learning that the world can be a kind and loving place. All Ben really wants is to feel safe, be loved, and know that he finally has a family who will never give up on him.
Ben may need a little time to warm up to new surroundings and people, but once he starts to trust you, his sweet personality shines through. He absolutely loves being petted, and if you dare to stop before he’s ready, he’ll gently paw at you to remind you that he’s not done! He loves being near his people, whether that means snuggling on the couch, lounging nearby, or simply enjoying the comfort of knowing someone is there.
Ben is a laid-back, low-maintenance kind of guy. His idea of a perfect day involves eating good food, receiving plenty of affection, and spending lots of time lounging and sleeping. He’s not looking for a running partner or an adventurous lifestyle. A backyard for potty breaks and a cozy spot inside the house are more than enough to make him happy. He is housebroken and does wonderfully in the home without getting into things or chewing. When his foster family leaves, he does well relaxing in a bedroom with the door closed.
Food is another one of Ben’s favorite things! When he wakes up, he’s ready for breakfast and will happily follow you around and paw at you to make sure you understand the assignment. He also has very good recall for a foster dog and comes when called, which makes him a joy to have around.
Ben currently lives with three large dogs and gets along very well with them. While he isn’t particularly playful, he enjoys being part of the pack and would likely do well in a home with another friendly dog. He also lives with five children, ranging in age from 5 to 15, and does wonderfully with them. He loves lying beside the kids on the couch while they pet him. He has not been introduced to cats, so his compatibility with them is unknown.
Ben can be shy around new people and needs a little time to feel comfortable, but he does warm up with patience. He is sensitive to raised voices and may cower when people yell, even during playful moments, so a calm, gentle home will help him feel secure. He is still working on his leash skills and becoming more comfortable riding in the car, but with kindness and encouragement, he continues to learn.
Ben is also heartworm-positive and has tested positive for two tick-borne diseases, anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis. He will need a family committed to working with their veterinarian to ensure he receives the appropriate care and treatment.
What Ben needs most is not a perfect home, but a patient one.
He needs people who understand that trust takes time, who will let him settle in at his own pace, and who will reassure him that he is safe. He needs a family who will welcome him inside, give him the affection he craves, and understand why being left behind may be frightening to him.
Imagine being a dog who has finally found a place where you can rest without fear, where gentle hands offer pets instead of harm, and where you no longer have to wonder if tomorrow you’ll still have a home. That seems to be what Ben is discovering now, and it is a beautiful thing to watch.
Ben isn't asking for much. A soft place to sleep, a full belly, a few gentle pets, and someone who will love him for the rest of his life.
