Meet Taz!
Taz has spent most of his life living outside, and we're working on showing him what life as a loved, cared-for companion can look like.
We met Taz when he was surrendered at a high-kill shelter in the Los Angeles area. When Taz came into our care, he was dealing with a significant skin infection that had gone untreated by his previous owners. With proper veterinary care, medication, regular baths, and some much-needed TLC, his skin is improving, his coat is looking better, and he's steadily gaining weight. He's already come a long way!
Taz is looking for an experienced handler who understands the importance of structure, consistency, and clear expectations.
One of the things we've learned about Taz is that he's happiest when he knows exactly what's expected of him. He loves working for food, walks nicely on leash, and genuinely enjoys having a job to do. Whether it's sitting for his dinner, offering a high-five, practicing recall, or responding to a simple "let's go" on a walk, Taz thrives when he's engaged with his handler and working toward something.
He's also incredibly tolerant of being handled. Between his skin treatments, baths, and all the care he's needed, we've quite literally handled every inch of this dog, and he's done wonderfully!
Taz enjoys hiking and outdoor adventures. He can also do well with a calm, easygoing female dog, provided introductions are handled appropriately.
A few important things to know about Taz:
Requires an experienced dog owner or handler
Loves training and is highly food motivated
Walks well on leash and responds to direction
Does well with full-body handling
Enjoys hiking and outdoor activities
May do well with a calm, female dog
Thrives with structure, consistency, and clear expectations
Has some resource-guarding behaviors that we are actively working on, which will require continued training and thoughtful management
His skin and overall physical condition are improving with treatment and proper care
Taz's ideal home:
Taz needs someone who understands that structure isn't about being strict; it's about giving a dog clarity and consistency. He's a dog who genuinely seems to enjoy the process of learning, engaging with his handler, and earning his rewards.
His resource guarding is something we're actively addressing, and his future adopter will need to be comfortable continuing that work. We're looking for someone who can recognize his strengths while also understanding the areas where he still needs support.
Taz has spent a lifetime without the consistency, care, and guidance that every dog deserves. Now that he's getting those things, we're seeing just how much he has to offer.
Taz isn't looking for someone to feel sorry for him. He's looking for someone who understands him.
For an experienced owner who enjoys training, hiking, and building a relationship with their dog, Taz could be an incredibly rewarding companion.
He's already made tremendous progress. We'd love to find someone who will help him keep going!
