Meet Niko, the German Shepherd mix with the heart of a poet, the soul of an Olympic wanderer, and ears that curve inwards at the tips like two adorable satellite dishes tuned exclusively to the frequency of freedom.
Niko is currently staying with us at the shelter, and to be completely blunt, he has given our indoor facility a 0/5 stars on Yelp. Too loud, too many walls, zero scenic mountain views. Inside the kennel, he’s quiet and shy, mostly wondering why the sky has a drywall ceiling.
Niko is a shy guy when you first meet him. He needs a little calm reassurance and time to decide whether you're one of the good ones. But once you're officially accepted into the Niko Inner Circle, his true personality comes shining through.
And spoiler alert: he is a sweet, gentle, affectionate boy who just wants a place to belong.
He was surrendered because he is a certified escape artist who decided a nearby busy highway was merely a suggestion. Where was he going? Nobody knows. The grocery store? An off-grid commune? A covert squirrel stakeout? Either way, he requires a secure, fenced yard and an owner who respects his Houdini heritage enough to keep him safe.
Niko spent his entire life as an outdoor dog, and honestly... the great outdoors is where this boy comes alive. Take him outside for a walk, and suddenly we meet a completely different dog.
Staff watched Niko transform almost immediately as those shelter doors closed behind him. His stiff body became loose and wiggly, his apprehension melted away, and before long he walked right up and delivered a big ol' wet smooch to staff as if to say: "Thank you. I really needed that. Now let's discuss where we're going next."
Niko has previously lived with multiple dogs, and after dog-dog assessments, our staff has determined that Niko THRIVES around other well-socialized dogs. He truly needs a canine companion to show him that humans are awesome and not as frightening as he believes. As always, we require a meet and greet with any resident dogs to make sure everyone approves of their potential new roommate.
He also does well on leash and responds nicely to verbal corrections.
This handsome guy would thrive in an active home with people who love spending time outdoors. Niko hasn't had much experience with life and companionship inside four walls, so his ideal family will understand that he may need patience as he learns what it means to be a true companion animal.
He needs someone willing to help him safely channel his active spirit, provide positive outlets for his energy, and show him that he doesn't have to keep searching for his next destination.
Because maybe...his next destination is home.
