DESCRIPTION

Imperfect dogs need perfect homes, too.

Meet Polly Pie, a remarkable 2-year-old Frenchie whose incredible will to survive has given her a second chance at the happy life she deserves.

Polly Pie was rescued from a local animal shelter in horrendous condition. She was suffering from extreme malnutrition and severe diarrhea and had lost approximately half of her body weight. Thanks to extensive veterinary care, a carefully managed diet, and lots of love from her foster family, Polly Pie has made an extraordinary recovery. Today, she weighs approximately 24 pounds and is happy, playful, energetic, and ready to begin the next chapter of her life.

Polly Pie does have a chronic medical condition called protein-losing enteropathy (PLE). Her condition is currently well managed without medication, but it is lifelong and her adopter must remain committed to maintaining her strict dietary requirements.

Polly Pie eats two home-prepared meals each day consisting of tilapia, sweet potatoes, and enriched pasta noodles, along with supplements to ensure she receives balanced nutrition. She must remain on an ultra-low-fat diet, and her treats must be low-fat as well. Fortunately, Polly Pie loves her meals and happily enjoys treats such as dried whitefish and sweet potatoes!

Her history of starvation has left her with a few quirks that her forever family will need to understand. Polly Pie is a true little scavenger and will enthusiastically search the ground for fallen palm dates, bugs, dried leaves, and just about anything else she can find—and she may try to eat it. Her family will need to be vigilant about what she can access.

She also needs to be fed separately from other pets. Because of her past food insecurity, she does best when someone sits with her while she eats. She can become upset with her food bowl if left alone. Fortunately, meals take only a few minutes because Polly Pie eats with impressive enthusiasm!

Polly Pie's Personality

Polly Pie is an active, inquisitive, happy little girl who is always ready to see what is happening around her. She loves:

Playing with toys and shaking her stuffies with wild abandon

Going for walks

Exploring the yard

Playing with the resident dog

Going for car rides

Cuddling beside her foster mom during movie time and bedtime

She is kennel trained and has done well with potty training. As with any dog entering a new home, she will need time to establish a new routine, so her family should expect the possibility of a few accidents during the transition.

Polly Pie has been fostered successfully with another Frenchie and several dog-savvy cats. She enjoys playing with both, although her enthusiastic attention and good-natured chasing can be a little much for the cats. For that reason, a cat-free home would likely be the best fit.

If Polly Pie has a canine companion, he or she should be friendly, playful, and non-confrontational. A dog who enjoys an energetic playmate would likely be a wonderful match.

Because Polly Pie's diet is so important and she has a tendency to hoover up things from the floor, children in her forever home should be old enough to understand and respect her dietary restrictions and the importance of keeping inappropriate items out of her reach. A dietary mishap could potentially trigger a flare-up of her gastrointestinal symptoms. Polly Pie is also exuberant and may jump up in excitement, so a home without very young or easily knocked-over children is recommended.

The Perfect Home for Polly Pie

Polly Pie isn't looking for a perfect family—she's looking for the right family.

Her ideal home will be one where her people understand that PLE is a lifelong condition, are committed to preparing her special diet and monitoring what she eats, and are willing to give her the structure and supervision she needs to stay healthy.

In return, they will receive an incredibly loving, silly, energetic, resilient little girl who has fought incredibly hard for her second chance.

Her foster mom says:

"Polly Pie has been an incredible success story. Her tenacity for life and fight for survival shows what an incredible little girl she is. It warms my heart to see her so happy now. The icing on the cake will be to find Polly Pie's perfect forever home to continue her happily-ever-after."
