Socialization: Jasper warms up to people and dogs quickly. He is very polite. At the dog park he loves to play and chase. He will say hello to every human and dog. He loves the company of other dogs and would do well with another playful dog in the home. Jasper also thrives in human company - he loves to cuddle and will happily nap with you. Jasper would also do best in a home with slightly older children who can respect his boundaries. Overall he has adjusted reasonably well to city life. Jasper is very much a Velcro dog - where you go, he will happily follow.
Training: Jasper is a fast learner. So far he has learned sit, down, and we are working on stay. He is food motivated and wants to please. He could benefit from leash training as he can certainly pull, but this is manageable and improving quickly. We currently use an easy-walk harness which can be sent with him to his forever home. Jasper has also gotten the hang of house training. He goes willingly into his crate with a treat or kibble. He is also getting used to being left alone and will typically settle on the couch when we are not here. He sleeps through the night in his crate from around 10pm up to 7am. Jasper does have a high prey drive towards squirrels and cats, so he cannot be in a home with cats or small animals. He has been fine with small dogs thus far.
Activity requirements: Jasper has setter energy. He loves to play and run but settles down quite well. When we are at home, he is happy to settle and nap nearby while we do our regular tasks; he is not disruptive and only wants to be near. He is incredibly scent driven, so our walks are 'sniffy walks'. Jasper loves the dog park and will romp and socialize with both humans and dogs. He gets a minimum of 2-3 walks per day (with us or his walker), each between 30-45 mins. This is supplemented with regular long leash walks and off-leash time at daycare and dog parks. If he gets a mix of these activities, he can go some days with less exercise. Jasper does certainly need a solid exercise plan (that includes safely running off leash) but he takes to routine well. With training, Jasper also has the potential to be a great running partner!
Fence requirements: Ideally, Jasper would have at least a medium sized yard that is securely fenced. Jasper can be quite prey driven and will try to slip through a fence if motivated enough. An invisible fence could also work. Jasper has some recall but this is not reliable once he's spotted a squirrel or bird. As he needs to be able to run daily, a fence (physical or invisible) is required for adopting Jasper.
Personality: Jasper is a sweetheart. He simply wants a cuddle and to be near you. At home, he likes to settle near you whenever he can. Jasper's forever family would ideally be a home with humans who work from home (or are otherwise mostly at home) and/or with another dog so he isn't left alone. He is a social butterfly with both dogs and humans at the park and daycare.
Health history: Jasper is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly flea/tick prevention and heartworm prevention. He was given a clean bill of health at his vet check after arrival to the US in March 2026. His next leishmaniasis test is due January 2027.
This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.
Foster comments: Jasper is very easy to fall in love with! It has been a pleasure to watch him adjust so well to an urban environment. He is a beautiful dog and has gotten so many admirers in our neighborhood. We know he will bring endless love to his forever family. We are hoping to find him a family that can give him all the love and attention he deserves!
Foster location: Philadelphia, PA
Transport note: We are able to arrange volunteer transport to get dogs from their foster home to their adopter as long as the adopter and the foster are within a 1,000 mile radius of each other and the adopter is located in the USA. If the adopter is more than 1,000 miles from the foster home, adoption would only be possible if the adopter is willing to drive the distance beyond the 1,000-mile transport limit. Long distance adoptions may also be possible if the adopter is willing to pay for a flight to get their dog from the foster home to their location if the foster feels this is an appropriate arrangement for the specific dog. Canadian adopters would have to drive into the USA to pick up their dog, as we do not transport outside of the USA.
