Socialization: Grace is shy and submissive but great with other dogs and completely ignores the cat. She is very shy and wary of new people. Grace will need a quiet home and lots of patience. She is extremely shy and uncertain of her new surroundings in the house. She has found quiet, safe spots in the home (behind couches and chairs) including her crate which she enters voluntarily. She will need to be given time to get comfortable at her own pace and settling in for her will take some time. Because she is very shy, a home with young kids is not a good fit for her.
Training: Grace is crated overnight but once comfortable, she could likely be trusted to be left out. Grace has never had an accident in the house nor does she chew on things she shouldn't. Grace doesn't know many commands yet but she is very eager to please.
Activity requirements: Grace is low/moderate energy and would enjoy a fenced yard to play in .She is just learning to walk on a leash but doing very well and doesn't pull. She would be fine with 2 short walks a day or just run time in the yard.
Fence requirements: Grace needs a fenced yard for some run time, so a fenced yard is a requirement for adopting her. She is still learning to trust people and vehicles we see on our walks and would do well in a quieter setting - no cities. In general she has mild prey drive. She would not be suited for an electric fence.
Personality: Grace is a total sweetheart but needs time to build trust. She is very submissive and will roll on her back for reassuring tummy rubs. She prefers to eat in or near her crate- away from the other dogs. She is not food motivated and is just learning about treats and toys. She is just starting to come out of her shell and share some of her goofiness with us. She is going to make a wonderful companion once settled into her new family home.
Health history: Grace is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. She is a healthy girl! Her next leishmaniasis test is due in December 2026.
This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.
Foster comments: Grace is a very sweet, timid girl, who will need a patient home to allow her to adjust at her own pace and come out of her shell and show her personality. She is not a good fit for a home with young children or in a busy city environment. A physical fence in the yard is required to adopt her.
Foster location: Kalamazoo, MI
Transport note: We are able to arrange volunteer transport to get dogs from their foster home to their adopter as long as the adopter and the foster are within a 1,000 mile radius of each other and the adopter is located in the USA. If the adopter is more than 1,000 miles from the foster home, adoption would only be possible if the adopter is willing to drive the distance beyond the 1,000-mile transport limit. Long distance adoptions may also be possible if the adopter is willing to pay for a flight for getting their dog from the foster home to their location if the foster feels this is an appropriate arrangement for the specific dog. Canadian adopters would have to drive into the USA to pick up their dog, as we do not transport outside of the USA.
