DESCRIPTION

Meet Debo, the handsome male Doberman. Debo came to the Shelter after his previous guardian was unable to continue caring for him. He grew up in a home with a teenagers and did well with them. He also has been around younger children in the family and did well. Debo has briefly been exposed to felines in a temporary home and saw them but has not met them. A home with dog-savvy felines and a very slow, thoughtful introduction may be a fit in his next home. Debo was described as house trained in his previous home and also was crate trained. Based on observations at the Shelter, Debo is a bit under-socialized. Once comfortable, Debo leans into familiar people for pets and attention. With other dogs, Debo can sometimes appear interested and other times conflicted (sometimes barking if he is behind a barrier and sees another dog). When meeting a dog at the Shelter, he was interested in playing with a big playbow but then dashed away if the other dog reciprocated play. This conflicting behavior is common in under-socialized dogs that are interested in socializing but just not quite sure what to do. Any resident dogs in the home should meet prior to adoption. Debo’s new family should anticipate working with him on his dog to dog interactions in a slow, thoughtful manner to help him gain some skills and confidence around other dogs. High traffic areas like dog parks are not recommended for Debo at this time as they are likely too overwhelming. Debo is available for pre-adoption. Come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
