Rodger - Doberman Pinscher Dog for Adoption in Columbus, Ohio

RODGER IS IN NEED OF A MEDICAL FOSTER!

Rodger is a full-blooded Doberman with natural ears. He is underweight and under-muscled, but even with that considered, he is a big, strong boy. He weighs just over 80 lbs now and is gaining, and we are working on building his hind leg strength. He has muscle wasting around his hips and back legs from living in a crate and only going outside (on a tie-out) 1-2 times a day. Now that he is able to run around, his hind legs shake from muscle weakness. He is around 5-6 years old according to the previous owners.

Rodger is currently being treated for Lyme disease and skin infections. We are completing genetic testing for Von Willebrand's Disease, which is a bleeding disorder that Dobermans are prone to. Once we have the results of that, we will perform a neuter and gastropexy for him. He also has an eyelid mass that needs to be removed as it rubs on his eye and bleeds at times. He has several other masses along his body, including a tennis ball-sized one on the inside of his left hind leg. We believe they are Lipomas (benign fatty masses) based on a fine needle aspirate, but we cannot know for sure unless we remove them and send them out for pathology. In total, he has about 7 of these masses in all different sizes along his abdomen and chest, plus the big one on the inside of his leg.
In addition to everything above, he is also in need of a dental cleaning with a cutback of his gums from a condition called gingival hyperplasia- where the gums are abnormally enlarged and have overgrown several of his teeth.

So to recap, his medical issues include:
1. Needs neutering
2. Gastropexy
3. Skin infection (CURRENTLY TREATING)
4. Lyme disease- testing and treatment, then follow-up testing (CURRENTLY TREATING)
5. Lab work for blood and fecal testing (DONE)
6. Lab work for genetic disease testing
7. Eyelid mass resection
8. Dental cleaning with cut back of overgrown gums
9. Biopsies on gums (to check for oral cancer) and eyelid +7 body masses
10. Deworming for at least 3 months for parasites, including special heartworm prevention (CURRENTLY TREATING)
11. 7 other masses, including one the size of a tennis ball

Rodger is a very sweet dog, but he has also spent all his life closed up in a crate, only seeing an enclosed backyard on a tie-out 1-2 times a day. As you can imagine, he has a bit of anxiety when being out in the world, so we would like to put him on anxiety meds and more training once we address all his medical issues. He is playful (especially with tennis balls and fetch) but tires out easily as he is still trying to build strength and muscle tone. He has done great with the other dogs he is currently being fostered with, but he needs a medical foster and more direct care than where he currently is for him to heal and thrive.
